Dear Readers;

Elections in Thurston County, WA. will be certified by the County Auditor on November 29th. link here
In the wake of recent elections across the USA, this story titled “20 Amazing Facts About Voting in the USA” will make one think about elections here in a different way. link here

1. STUDY: CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS TWO YEARS OF AGE PROGRAMMED BY BRANDING
"A new study [2001] shows that children as young as two years old easily recognise brand logos and that the amount of TV they watched determined how much branding they recognised. The study, titled “Identifying determinants of young children’s brand awareness: Television, parents and peers” by Patti Valkenburg and Moniek Buijzen of the Amsterdam School of Communications Research and published in the journal Applied Developmental Psychology, examines brand recognition and recall in a younger age group than previous studies. Infants as young as two were able to recognise 8 out of 12 brands they were shown, and the more TV they had been exposed to, the more brands they recognised," quoting Whitedot. link here
And this site, "Advertising Education Forum (AEF) is a non-profit, academically neutral organisation that offers a comprehensive database of information on advertising and children and related issues."

FURTHER:
"Remotely Controlled: How television is damaging our lives - and what we can do about it" is a book by Aric Sigman and examines how television impacts the lives of Britons. This is just one of the powerful reviews from Amazon.com, "Every child's mind is trying to connect up with reality to get its innate needs met. This brilliant book shows what happens when television watching gets in the way of the natural developmental processes designed to ensure we develop well. It describes all the medical and psychological research that demonstrates how, by capturing children's attention mechanism, inhibiting their critical faculties and conditioning them with useless expectations, TV addiction is mindlessly destroying cultures all around the world. The effects are no less grim when adults watch more than an hour of TV a day – depression, anxiety disorders, obesity, attention disorders and the rise in crime and violence are all linked to the introduction of TV. It literally damages the brain, but, like all addicts, we are largely unaware of the true situation and probably will remain so until it is too late." Could be applied anywhere.

2. CHANGES NOTED IN HUMAN BRAIN EVOLUTION 37,000 YEARS AGO
"Howard Hughes Medical Institute researchers who have analyzed sequence variations in two genes that regulate brain size in human populations have found evidence that the human brain is still evolving.
They speculate that if the human species continues to survive, the human brain may continue to evolve, driven by the pressures of natural selection. Their data suggest that major variants in these genes arose at roughly the same times as the origin of culture in human populations as well as the advent of agriculture and written language. The research team, which was led by Bruce T. Lahn, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at the University of Chicago, published its findings in two articles in the September 9, 2005, issue of the journal Science. Their analyses focused on detecting sequence changes in two genes - Microcephalin and "abnormal spindle-like microcephaly associated" (ASPM) - across different human populations. In humans, mutations in either of these genes can render the gene nonfunctional and cause microcephaly - a clinical syndrome in which the brain develops to a much smaller size than normal...heir statistical analysis indicated that the Microcephalin haplogroup D appeared about 37,000 years ago, and the ASPM haplogroup D appeared about 5,800 years ago - both well after the emergence of modern humans about 200,000 years ago," quoting the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) press release. link here
[Ed. Note: That means some 2,000 years just prior to 35,000 years ago when a certain Master Teacher was walking this Earth, humans possesed genes and an evolving brain close to modern day, and were not just cavemen!] link here

3. ORGAN TRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS TAKE ON BEHAVIORS OF DONORS
"According to this study of patients who have received transplanted organs, particularly hearts, it is not uncommon for memories, behaviours, preferences, and habits associated with the donor to be transferred to the recipient," quoting this Nexus Magazine story. link here

4. "TELOMERASE'S NEW TALENT"
"Telomerase is a miracle worker of sorts. Normally, when cells multiply, their chromosomes suffer wear-and-tear, and eventually their progeny can't reproduce any more. Telomerase helps cells avoid this fate by protecting chromosomes. But that's not all this enzyme does, according to a new study in mice. It can also encourage stem cells to proliferate, a finding that may suggest new strategies for tackling cancer and problems related to aging. Telomeres are protective DNA structures at the ends of chromosomes that have been likened to the tips of shoelaces. They are refurbished in young, active cells--and in most cancers--by telomerase. In recent years, research has suggested that telomerase alone could spur cell growth without altering telomeres, which would mean it has other duties besides synthesizing new DNA tips. Now a group at Stanford University School of Medicine, led by cancer biologist Steven Artandi, has conclusively shown this with genetically manipulated mice," quoting ScienceNow. [Ed. 5. VACCINE FOR CERVICAL CANCER IN SIGHT WITHIN 5 YEARS
"A vaccine to protect women from one of the biggest cancer killers could be available within five years. Early clinical trials of a vaccine for cervical cancer have shown that it is 100% effective. It also protects against genital warts. The breakthrough could help to save thousands of lives each year. Dr Anne Szarewksi, a clinical consultant at Cancer Research UK, described the results as 'very exciting.' Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women under 35 in the UK. It claims 1,300 lives each year. link here

6. MORE ON RFID TRACKING YOUR EVERY MOVE
"RFID, which stands for Radio Frequency IDentification, is a technology that uses computer chips smaller than a grain of sand to track items from a distance. And as this mind-blowing book explains, plans and efforts are being made now by global corporations and the U.S. government to turn this advanced technology, these spychips, into a way to track our daily activities – and keep us all on Big Brother's short leash. Compiling massive amounts of research with firsthand knowledge, Spychips explains RFID technology and reveals the history and future of the master planners' strategies to imbed these trackers on everything -- from postage stamps to shoes to people themselves -- and spy on Americans without our knowledge or consent. It also urgently encourages consumers to take action now to protect their privacy and civil liberties before it's too late," quoting Amazon.com.

7. RESEARCHERS LEARN OPTIC LESSONS FROM MOTHER NATURE
"When nanotech researcher Luke Lee is looking for inspiration for the next generation of optical gadgets, he ponders the lobster. And the house fly. And the octopus. Lee and other "bioengineers" are borrowing ideas from all corners of the animal kingdom to design artificial vision systems that could be used for high-tech cameras, motion detectors, navigation devices in unmanned vehicles, or perhaps even synthetic retinal implants. Lee and his colleague at the University of Berkeley, Robert Szema, describe the latest progress on this front in an article in the November 18 issue of the journal Science, published by AAAS, the nonprofit science society," quoting the journal Science. link here

8. TEFLON-RELATED CHEMICAL STUDIES HID BY MANUFACTURER DUPONT
[Ed. Note: This is a surprise?]
"DuPont Co. hid studies showing the risks of a Teflon-related chemical used to line candy wrappers, pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags, and hundreds of other food containers, according to internal company documents and a former employee. The chemical Zonyl can rub off the liner and get into food. Once in a person's body, it can break down into perfluorooctanoic acid and its salts, known as PFOA, a related chemical used in the making of Teflon-coated cookware. The Environmental Protection Agency has been trying to decide whether to classify PFOA as a "likely" human carcinogen. The Food and Drug Administration, in a letter released Wednesday evening [Nov. 16] by DuPont, said it was continuing to monitor the safety of PFOA chemicals in food. The DuPont documents were made public Wednesday by the Environmental Working Group, a research and advocacy organization," quoting the AP. link here

9. "THE STRANGE CASE OF SUPERNATURAL WATER"
"Florida's citrus crop contributes billions of dollars to the state's economy, so when that industry is threatened, anything that might help is considered. Back in 2001, when citrus canker was blighting the crop and threatening to reduce that vital source of revenue, an interesting — if not quite scientific — alternative was considered. Katherine Harris, then Florida's secretary of state — and now a member of the U.S. House of Representatives — ordered a study in which, according to an article by Jim Stratton in the Orlando Sentinel, 'researchers worked with a rabbi and a cardiologist to test "Celestial Drops," promoted as a canker inhibitor because of its "improved fractal design," "‘infinite levels of order," and "high energy and low entropy."' The study determined that the product tested was, basically, water that had apparently been blessed according to the principles of Kabbalic mysticism, 'chang[ing] its molecular structure and imbu[ing] it with supernatural healing powers,'" quoting LiveScience. link here

11. FLIGHT INTO PRECIOUS METALS LED BY GOLD & PLATINUM
"Gold rose to its highest level in nearly 18 years in Asian trade on Thursday [Nov. 17], while platinum came to within $10 an ounce of $1,000 as fund managers bought heavily amid a surge of investor interest in precious metals...Some dealers said gold could hit $500 by year-end on fears about global inflation levels and heightened concerns about geopolitical uncertainty. Platinum rose to its highest level in nearly 26 years, hitting a bid price high of $992 an ounce, and dealers said the metal was likely to test the $1,000 level soon due to active buying by funds," quoting Reuters. link here

12. END OF CHEAP OIL & WHAT THAT PORTENDS FOR THE ECONOMY
[Ed. Note: this is one of the best articles this writer has seen written on the energy issue.] "Our lives are now so dependent on oil that it is impossible to conceive of a world without it. Before long, however, we will have no choice. The sooner we start planning for that reality, and changing the way we live, the better our chance of survival," quoting The Ecologist. link here

"CUBA PROVIDES AN EXAMPLE OF INGENUITY"
"An example of what can be achieved, admittedly on a much smaller scale than would be needed in the UK, can be found in Cuba. In the late 1980s, farmers in Cuba were highly reliant on cheap fuels and petrochemicals imported from the Soviet Union, using more agrochemicals per acre than their American counterparts. In 1990, as the Soviet empire collapsed, Cuba lost those imports and faced an agricultural crisis. The population lost 20 pounds on average and malnutrition was nearly universal, especially among young children. The Cuban GDP fell by 85 per cent and inhabitants of the island nation experienced a substantial decline in their material standard of living. Cuban authorities responded by breaking up large state- owned farms, offering land to farming families, and encouraging the formation of small agricultural co-ops. Cuban farmers began employing oxen as a replacement for the tractors they could no longer afford to fuel. Cuban scientists began investigating biological methods of pest control and soil fertility enhancement. The government sponsored widespread education in organic food production, and the Cuban people adopted a mostly vegetarian diet out of necessity. Salaries for agricultural workers were raised, in many cases to above the levels of urban office workers. Urban gardens were encouraged in parking lots and on public lands, and thousands of rooftop gardens appeared. Small food animals such as chickens and rabbits began to be raised on rooftops as well. As a result of these efforts, Cuba was able to avoid what might otherwise have been a severe famine. Today the nation is changing from an industrial to an agrarian society. While energy use in Cuba is now one-twentieth of that in the US, the economy is growing at a slow but steady rate. Food production has returned to 90 per cent of its precrisis levels," quoting the Ecologist.

OF LOCAL NOTE
"A hearing examiner Friday [Nov. 18] rejected an appeal seeking more environmental review of a proposed Wal-Mart supercenter. Opponents of the 187,400-square-foot store can appeal to the City Council for further consideration, said Grant Beck, Yelm's community development director. Gregory May, an opponent of the proposed store, said the Yelm Commerce Group will ask the City Council to put more environmental review into the project at a meeting either in December or January. The nation's largest retailer has proposed to build the store on 20 acres at state Route 507 and Grove Road," quoting The Olympian. link here

"Contaminated water at a Yelm elementary school will have students drinking bottled water until the problem is fixed. Water at Prairie Elementary School tested positive for E. coli bacteria Wednesday. The school district confirmed the test Friday...The E. coli was found during a routine test of the school’s water system. Prairie Elementary is one of three Yelm elementary schools using well water instead of city water. The other two, Lackamas and Southworth, have no contamination. The source of the E. coli seems to be the 120,000-gallon reservoir from which the school gets its water, according to Tim Tayne, a water quality expert with Clearwater Utility Services, who tests the Yelm systems," quoting The Olympian. link here

"The City of Yelm has received a $565,000 transportation grant from the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board. This grant is part of a $965,000 project to complete the Stevens Street Y4 connector from Stevens Street NE (recently completed in 2005) to Stevens Street NW connecting at Edwards Street near Yelm Middle School," quoting the City's website. link here

1. PUGET SOUND UNDER ASSAULT

PUGET SOUND ORCAS NOW ON ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST
"After years of legal challenges, Puget Sound orcas have been granted federal protection as an endangered species, officials announced this morning. Citing new information and analysis, NOAA Fisheries Service officials acknowledged that the local killer whales were at risk of extinction and reversed an earlier decision not to give the iconic orcas protection under the Endangered Species Act," quoting the Seattle PI. link here

PROPOSAL TO ALLOW MORE OIL TANKERS
"Washington Senator Maria Cantwell is threatening a filibuster to block legislation she says would open Puget Sound to an increased risk of oil spills. Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska has proposed a change that would allow the B-P refinery at Ferndale to handle more tankers. Cantwell says that would overturn the 1977 Magnuson amendment. The Magnuson amendment prevents expansion of Puget Sound refineries unless needed for consumers in the state. The group "People for Puget Sound" says Congressmen Dave Reichert, Jay Inslee and Norm Dicks blocked a similar move in the House to open Puget Sound to more tanker traffic," quoting the AP. link here

2. "COMPUTER GAME HELPS SENIORS STAY SHARP"
"Granny may not have the much-coveted Xbox 360 game console on her Christmas list this year, but if a California company founded by neuroscientists has its way, computer games may soon become must-have items for seniors. Preliminary results presented here 14 November at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience suggest that a game developed by the company can improve the memory and attention of elderly people. The game, called HiFi, may lack the excitement of Grand Theft Auto, but it's designed to boost the function of the aging brain, says neuroscientist Henry Mahncke, vice president of research and outcomes for Posit Science, based in San Francisco, California," quoting Science Now. link here

3. MILLIONS MAY HAVE RECEIVED CONTAMINATED POLIO VACCINE
"A polio vaccine produced by at least one eastern European manufacturer was contaminated with a potentially cancer-causing virus as late as 1978, according to a new study. Although most early batches of the vaccine contained this virus, modern manufacturing procedures were thought to have removed it by 1962. The findings indicate that millions more people were exposed to the risky virus than previously thought. Introduced in 1954, the polio vaccine was a public health breakthrough that brought the spread of the paralytic virus to a screeching halt. To produce enough poliovirus to make vaccine, manufacturers grew the virus in the kidney cells of rhesus monkeys. Unbeknownst to researchers at the time, rhesus monkeys are often infected with SV40, a virus that may cause cancer in humans. Poliovirus stocks made using monkey cells were soon nearly universally contaminated with SV40. Once the problem was discovered in 1959, most manufacturers eliminated SV40 from their virus stocks with an anti-SV40 antiserum," quoting Science Now.

4. CATERPILLAR POPULATIONS GOOD PREDICTER OF CLIMATE CHANGE
"You probably don't think about caterpillars when you consider the dangers of climate change, but perhaps you should. A survey of parasites that feed on the insects predicts that changes in weather patterns could cause booms in caterpillar populations that devastate crops and result in famine...A team led by Lee Dyer, an ecologist at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, has assembled a case by pooling data from 15 North and South American butterfly and moth studies ranging from Canada to Brazil. Dyer's team also gathered records of precipitation in the area during those years. The more erratic the precipitation from year to year, the lower the frequency of caterpillar infections, the team reports online this week in Proceedings of the National Academies of Science. 'I was stunned' at the strength of the correlation, says Dyer. Now Dyer would like to see if extreme weather events like the recent hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico also disrupt caterpillar parasites," quoting Science Now. link here

5. "MEDITATION ASSOCIATED WITH STRUCTURAL CHANGES IN BRAIN"
"The regular practice of meditation appears to produce structural changes in areas of the brain associated with attention and sensory processing. An imaging study led by Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) researchers showed that particular areas of the cerebral cortex, the outer layer of the brain, were thicker in participants who were experienced practitioners of a type of meditation commonly practiced in the U.S. and other Western countries. The article appears in the Nov. 15 issue of NeuroReport, and the research also is being presented Nov. 14 at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in Washington, DC," quoting Mass. General Hospital Public Affairs.

6. NASA SPACECRAFT GATHERED INFO TO CHECK EINSTEIN THEORY
"A NASA/Stanford physics experiment called Gravity Probe B (GP-B) recently finished a year of gathering science data in Earth orbit. The results, which will take another year to analyze, should reveal the shape of space-time around Earth--and, possibly, the vortex. Time and space, according to Einstein's theories of relativity, are woven together, forming a four-dimensional fabric called "space-time." The tremendous mass of Earth dimples this fabric, much like a heavy person sitting in the middle of a trampoline. Gravity, says Einstein, is simply the motion of objects following the curvaceous lines of the dimple. If Earth were stationary, that would be the end of the story. But Earth is not stationary. Our planet spins, and the spin should twist the dimple, slightly, pulling it around into a 4-dimensional swirl. This is what GP-B went to space to check," quoting NASA.

7. "SCIENCE TO RIDE GRAVIATIONAL WAVES"
"Many expect it to be one of the biggest scientific breakthroughs of our age: 'There'll certainly be a Nobel Prize in it for somebody,' says Jim Hough...The sheeting hides a trench and, within it, the vacuumed tube of an experiment Hough believes will finally detect the most elusive of astrophysical phenomena - gravitational waves. The Glasgow University scientist has been chasing these "ripples" in space-time for more than 30 years and feels certain he is now just a matter of months away from bagging his quarry... It will be a big event for two reasons: it will be yet another confirmation that Einstein's Theory of General Relativity is correct, but it will also open up a new kind of astronomy that will allow us to look inside the most violent events in the Universe...A new kind of astronomy requires a new type of "telescope", and that's just what Hough and UK-German colleagues have been developing on farmland a short drive from Hanover. It is called GEO 600," quoting the BBC. link here

8. "TRUCKERS CHOOSE HYDROGEN POWER"
"Hundreds of semitrailer trucks zipping along North American highways are now powered in part by hydrogen. These 18-wheelers make hydrogen as they go, eliminating the need for high-pressure, cryogenic storage tanks or hydrogen filling stations, which, by the way, don't yet exist. These truckers aren't just do-gooders. They like Canadian Hydrogen Energy's Hydrogen Fuel Injection, or HFI, system because it lets them save fuel, get more horsepower and, as a bonus, cause less pollution...HFI is a bolt-on, aftermarket part that injects small amounts of hydrogen into the engine air intake, said Canadian Hydrogen Energy's Steve Gilchrist. Fuel efficiency and horsepower are improved because hydrogen burns faster and hotter than diesel, dramatically boosting combustion efficiency," quoting Wired News. link here
.

9. VEHICLES THAT TALK TO EACH OTHER IN TESTING MODE
"The demonstration at Honda's test center outside Tokyo previews what is shaping up as the next phase of automotive safety: vehicles that talk to each other and the highway system itself. They silently send or receive warnings from other cars in close proximity. Or they pass information back and forth to sensors along the roadway that become part of a real-time database. They tell of their approach to an intersection, warn about hazards ahead or keep an inattentive driver from running a red light, all with the goal of preventing accidents. Around the world, major automakers from General Motors to BMW see the idea of a transportation system that can communicate as a major safety breakthrough," quoting USA Today. link here
.

10. ARCHAEOLOGISTS DISCOVER POTTERY BEARING NAME "GOLIATH"
"Archaeologists digging at the purported biblical home of Goliath have unearthed a shard of pottery bearing an inscription of the Philistine's name, a find they claimed lends historical credence to the Bible’s tale of David's battle with the giant. While the discovery is not definitive evidence of Goliath's existence, it does support the Bible's depiction of life at the time the battle was supposed to have occurred, said Dr. Aren Maeir, a professor at Bar-Ilan University and director of the excavation. 'What this means is that at the time there were people there named Goliath,' he said. 'It shows us that David and Goliath's story reflects the cultural reality of the time.' In the story, David slew Goliath with a slingshot," quoting the AP. link here
.

11. "ANCIENT 'GODZILLA'-LIKE SEA CREATURE DISCOVERED"
"A newfound ancient sea creature looks to be part crocodile, part T. rex, and 100 percent terrifying. The 13-foot long beast, Dakosaurus andiniensis, had a massive 18-inch-long jaw with interlocking 4-inch teeth. It is a long-lost relative of the crocodile yet it had fins...The sheer strangeness of the Dakosaurus andiniensis, found in South America and announced today, led its discoverers to call it Godzilla after the huge, amphibious, dinosaur-like movie icon...The finding is detailed in the Nov. 11 issue of the journal Science," quoting LiveScience. link here

"A grocery workers'labor union has begun contributing money toward a residents' campaign to force more environmental review of a proposed Wal-Mart super-center. The contributions of Local 367 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union give opponents hope to keep their challenge alive. Two weeks ago, a hearings examiner ruled that city officials had done enough environmental review to allow plans to proceed on the 187,400-square foot store. 1. MIAMI SEAQUARIUM CLOSED BECAUSE OF HURRICANE - RETURN LOLITA TO PUGET SOUND!
Several times this writer has mentioned Orca Lolita being in a deteriorating facility in South Florida. Now, the media has revealed Miami's Seaquarium lost alot of marine life in the aftermath of Hurricane Wilma, alothough Lolita seems to be fine. Quoting the Miami Herald, "The Miami Seaquarium lost 1,000 fish, including 20 sharks, when Hurricane Wilma pushed Biscayne Bay into the marine park, Seaquarium executives said Friday [Nov. 4]. The widespread deaths -- the worst since Hurricane Andrew flooded the Virginia Key park in 1992 -- spared the Seaquarium's star mammals: dolphins, sea lions and Lolita, the killer whale. But they add to the woes facing the 50-year-old park, which now doesn't expect to reopen until sometime next year." link here
"Orca Network has been working on the Free Lolita Campaign since 1995, including two years in Miami working to bring the last surviving captive Puget Sound orca back home from the Miami Seaquarium. We continue to fight for Lolita's freedom today, and provides the Lolita Email List to bring you the latest news about Lolita, Keiko, and other captive whales. The Free Lolita Email List is a free service provided by Orca Network, but if you are in a position to help support the work we do for Lolita and her family, we welcome you to become an Orca Network member, make a contribution, or visit our shopping page. Orca Network is a non-profit organization with IRS 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation status, registered in the State of Washington," quoting their site. [Ed. 2. LARGEST TOXIC CLEANUP EVER ATTEMPTED – IN USA’S NEW ORLEANS
"The Army Corps of Engineers is planning one of the biggest environmental cleanups ever attempted: scraping miles of sediment laced with cancer-causing chemicals from New Orleans' hurricane-flooded neighborhoods. Contaminants in the sediment include toxic metals, industrial compounds, petroleum byproducts and a banned insecticide, all at levels that signal potential cancer risks or other long-term hazards, a Dallas Morning News review of government test results shows. The cleanup plans would involve crews using front-end loaders to scoop up contaminated sediment that Hurricane Katrina floods left in yards, playgrounds and other spots throughout the Greater New Orleans area. In some instances, protecting people might require steps less radical than removing soil, such as planting grass to cover contaminated yards," quoting the Dallas Morning News. link here

3. OPEN-SOURCE ENERGY NETWORK (OSEN) MAKES DEBUT
"In launching its website today, after several months of incubation, the Open Source Energy Network ( link here ) is making its debut splash by releasing never-before-seen video testimonials from seven leading alternative energy inventors. These professional videos were prepared by the Disclosure Project, headed by Dr. Steven Greer, and were underwritten with sizeable funds for high-quality production. They were prepared to serve as testimony that will stand up in court. They document the fact, both that there are viable new energy technologies which could rid us of our dependence on polluting fossil fuels, and that there have been active efforts in suppressing these. Explosively, these videos reveal names and tactics of this Luddite resistance against scientific progress. This power-packed series includes testimony from Tom Bearden; Thomas Vallone, Paul Czysz, Hal Puthoff, David Hamilton, Ted Loder, Paul LaViolette, several of whom hold PhDs, and all of whom are held in high esteem by their peers in the field of clean energy," quoting their website: link here

4. WORLD WAR II AIRMAN’S FROZEN REMAINS RECOVERED
"For decades, the family of a World War II airman who died when his training flight crashed somewhere in a California glacier believed they would never see him again. They learned to accept his loss, painful though it was. But now, with a set of frozen remains recovered from the same glacier and flown to a lab at Hickam Air Force Base for identification last week, the wait has suddenly become unbearable. Scott Shriver is convinced the airman is his uncle: Army Aviation Cadet Ernest G. Munn, a 23-year-old from Pleasant Grove, Ohio. Shriver's mother, as well as her two sisters, also are convinced "brother Glenn" finally has been found. Shriver has followed news accounts of the frozen airman's discovery with soaring anticipation and called the Army lab at Hickam soon after the remains arrived last week. A 47-year-old high school biology teacher from Pittsburgh, Shriver begged the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command to speed up the process of identification. 'I have three, 80-something-year-old women who, frankly, are not in the best of health and may not live long enough to hear the answer to this question,’ Shriver said," quoting the Honolulu Advertiser. link here

5. "ARCHAEOLOGISTS IDENTIFY COPERNICUS' SKULL" & RELEASE COMPUTERIZED PORTRAIT
"Archaeologists believe they have located the grave of 16th-century astronomer and solar-system proponent Nicolaus Copernicus in a Polish church, one of the scientists announced Thursday [Nov. 3]. Copernicus, who died in 1543 at 70 after challenging the ancient belief that the sun revolved around the earth, was buried at the Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Frombork, 180 miles (290 kilometers) north of the capital, Warsaw," quoting the AP. link here

6. HUBBLE TELESCOPE FOCUSES ON MARTIAN STORM
"When Mars orbited close to Earth this past weekend, many sky watchers noticed a large dust storm raging across its surface. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope took detailed images that were released Thursday [Nov. 3]. The large regional dust storm appears as the brighter, redder cloud in the middle of the planet's disk in the Hubble photo. This storm has been kicking up dust along the planet's equatorial regions for several weeks, and is about 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) long, measured diagonally. A dust storm that large on Earth would cover Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Astronomers say this storm is likely responsible for the reddish, dusty haze and other dust clouds that have been seen across the planet in views from Hubble, ground-based telescopes, and the NASA and ESA spacecraft orbiting the planet recently," quoting Space.com link here

7. BIRD FLU PANDEMIC COULD PUSH WORLD INTO ECONOMIC QUAGMIRE
"The Asian Development Bank on Thursday [Nov. 3] projected a bird flu pandemic in Asia could kill around 3 million people, cause economic losses of up to nearly $300 billion and possibly push the world into a recession. China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand would likely be hit hardest in the event of an outbreak, the report said. The bank outlined two potential scenarios, both assuming that a pandemic would last about a year, causing 20 percent of the region’s population to fall ill and 0.5 percent of them — or 3 million people — dying," quoting the AP. link here
"The Ministry of Health in Indonesia has confirmed two additional cases of human infection with H5N1 avian influenza. The first newly confirmed case was a 19-year-old woman from Tangerang, near Jakarta, who developed symptoms on 19 October, was admitted to hospital on 26 October, and died on 28 October. The second case is her 8-year-old brother. He developed symptoms on 25 October and remains hospitalized in good condition," quoting the World Health Orgnanization (WHO).

WHO MEETS ON AVIAN FLU
"A global meeting opened today in Geneva with the aim of building consensus on a common approach to avian influenza and human pandemic influenza. The meeting, jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the World Bank and WHO, brings together 600 delegates from more than 100 countries. They include experts on animal health, human health, the environment and economics," quoting the WHO.

WATCH WHAT RICHARD BRANSON DOES!
"In a sign of growing travel industry concern about a possible global flu pandemic, Virgin Atlantic Chairman Richard Branson said Wednesday he had purchased 10,000 courses of medicine for the airline’s employees to use in the event of an outbreak. At a news conference held in conjunction with a global health summit in New York, first reported on CNBC, Branson said he bought enough of the antiviral drug Tamiflu to treat up to 10,000 airline crew members, who he said would be on the front lines of any pandemic. Branson had to buy the drug in Canada because manufacturer Hoffmann-La Roche has suspended shipments in the U.S. — precisely because it was concerned about such hoarding," quoting MSNBC. link here
"VIETNAM HIT HARDEST BY BIRD FLU"
"Vietnam, the country hit hardest by bird flu, reported another death on Tuesday [Nov. 8], and the Swiss maker of Tamiflu said it had stopped selling the antiviral drug in China and was turning over supplies to the government," quoting the AP. link here

8. U. S. SENATE VOTES TO KEEP ANWR OIL DRILLING ALIVE [SAD, SAD!]
"After a 25-year battle between environmentalists and the oil industry, Congress is embarking on the Republican Party's best chance in decades to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to oil drilling. The Senate this morning voted to keep alive a provision to allow drilling on a portion of ANWR's windswept coastal plain, kicking off a last-minute scramble to settle the issue before lawmakers head home for the holidays. But how Congress ultimately resolves the country's most divisive environmental battle may have little to do with caribou, wilderness or the need for domestic energy. Republican leaders are including the provision in a budget package immune from filibuster by Democrats, so the future of the refuge ultimately may be driven by issues having nothing to do with oil," quoting the Seattle Times. [Ed. Note: This writer has been there and seen the beauty from the air and on the ground. This is a sad day in this country's political history from politicians that have NO courage to stand up for Mother Earth and against consumption. Has any of them touted alternative fuel sources investment along the dollars supporting the oil industry?] link here
I am pleased to say one Senator did make a heroic effort to stop this insanity. Washington Senator Maria Cantwell made major stand. link here

U. S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES SAYS NO TO DRILLING - STILL COULD BE APPROVED
"House leaders late Wednesday [Nov. 9] abandoned an attempt to push through a hotly contested plan to open an Alaskan wildlife refuge to oil drilling, fearing it would jeopardize approval of a sweeping budget bill Thursday [Nov. 10]. They also dropped from the budget document plans to allow states to authorize oil and gas drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts — regions currently under a drilling moratorium. The actions were a stunning setback for those who have tried for years to open a coastal strip of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, or ANWR, to oil development, and a victory for environmentalists, who have lobbied hard against the drilling provisions. President Bush has made drilling in the Alaska refuge his top energy priorities...If the House bill passes in a vote set for Thursday, the two chambers would appoint negotiators to work out differences between the bills. Senate Republicans could insist the ANWR drilling proposal be reinserted into the House bill, forcing a new vote by the full House," quoting the AP. link here

9. CONGRESSIONAL COMMITTEE VOTES TO SELL PUBLIC LAND
"If Congressman Richard Pombo and House Republicans have their way, well over 5 million acres of mining claims across the West will be up for sale, in what could become one of the largest land giveaways in U.S. history. Mining and other development on these lands would threaten hundreds of America’s most treasured natural places. Mining claims currently can be staked on as many as 270 million acres of public land in the 13 western states. Until 1994, when the Clinton administration put a halt on new land purchases, companies that struck gold or other metals on their claims could simply buy that land at prices set by the Congress in 1872, and make millions on what was previously public property. Today the House Resources Committee passed a proposal by Chairman Richard Pombo to overturn the Clinton ban on purchasing these mining lands and put 5.7 million acres of public lands up for sale in 13 western states," quoting the Environmental Working Group. link here

10. OLDEST PLACE OF CHRISTIAN WORSHIP DISCOVERED – IN ISRAEL
"Israeli state archaeologists have discovered mosaics, pottery, and other remains of a Roman-era Christian building on the grounds of a high-security prison here. They say the site could be the oldest public place of Christian worship ever uncovered in Israel and perhaps one of the earliest such sites in the world. The mosaic floor of the structure, buried beneath rock, soil and asphalt, was discovered Oct. 30 by an Israeli prisoner working on behalf of the Israel Antiquities Authority. The agency has been excavating the compound for more than a year to ensure that nothing of historic value is lost during an ongoing renovation project. At a news conference Sunday [Nov. 6], Yardena Alexandre, a spokeswoman for the authority, called the discovery ‘one of the most important finds for the history of early Christianity,’" quoting the Washington Post. link here

11. NEIL ARMSTRONG SPEAKS OUT ABOUT HIS REMARKABLE LIFE
"On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped out of an odd-looking spaceship and into the pages of history as the first man on the moon. Today, he remains one of the most famous people on the planet, but he is also famously private. For years, Armstrong has shunned the media and the limelight, but now he is about to take a giant leap back into the public view. He has finally authorized a biography, entitled First Man and written by James Hansen. For the first time, he has agreed to a television profile, speaking to 60 Minutes correspondent Ed Bradley about his extraordinary life," quoting the CBS News website. link here
.

12. "THE FBI'S SECRET SCRUTINY" (EXAMINING RECORDS OF ORDINARY AMERICANS)
"The Connecticut case affords a rare glimpse of an exponentially growing practice of domestic surveillance under the USA Patriot Act, which marked its fourth anniversary on Oct. 26. "National security letters," created in the 1970s for espionage and terrorism investigations, originated as narrow exceptions in consumer privacy law, enabling the FBI to review in secret the customer records of suspected foreign agents. The Patriot Act, and Bush administration guidelines for its use, transformed those letters by permitting clandestine scrutiny of U.S. residents and visitors who are not alleged to be terrorists or spies," quoting the Washington Post. link here

RAMTHA SCHOOL NEWS
This writer’s first encounter with Ramtha in this life was 20 years ago this February when this 31 year-old reached all of his goals in life by age 30 and questioned is this all life is? To be born, get education, graduate with degrees, get married, have children, a career, grandchildren, golden years, retirement and die? There MUST be something more to this thing we cherish called life!” Incredibly, I met my Master Teacher Ramtha, who answered these questions and more. One of his teachings that caught my ear was his description of what he called “the days to come” and the reactions of most everyone to things that made sense to me, as I had experienced the violence of hurricanes and earthquakes. I knew nothing of the coming diseases he mentioned, however his call to take care of one’s body resonated to my soul and I turned from abusing this body to cherishing it so I could engage life. Last week, JZ Knight & Ramtha’s School of Enlightenment (RSE) released their 4th Newsletter for RSE students with Ramtha’s predictions of the coming plagues and dangers of living in cities from those heady days of 1986. You will get chills reading the accuracy of his statements from 20 years ago, now available online for the public. link here

Kleiner's Korner For Week of November 7, 2005
Dear Readers;

Many of you have asked for the hotlinks to be listed in full on Kleiner’s Korner. So, from this point on, the KK will now list all link addresses.

1. U. S. SUPREME COURT: CELL PHONE DANGERS CAN BE REVEALED IN STATE COURTS
"The Supreme Court refused Monday [Oct. 31] to consider throwing out class-action lawsuits that accuse cell phone makers of failing to protect users from unsafe levels of radiation. The cell industry argued that because the phones comply with federal rules, the lawsuits should be dismissed. Justices declined without comment to consider the appeal. Lawsuits were filed in state courts in Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, New York, and Pennsylvania seeking to force manufacturers to make phones safer. The lawsuits call for headsets, on grounds that they could reduce risks of brain tumors, and instructions for users. The consumers who filed the lawsuits claim that the industry violated various state laws on consumer protection, product liability, negligence, and fraud, among other things," quoting the AP. [Ed. Note: Kleiner's Korner readers are well aware of the dangers of cell phones as this writer has continually presented documentation of facts the last four years. Is this the next "tobacco industry" class action suit about corporate greed and negligence vs. consumer health?] link here

2. FRENCH WINE BEING USED FOR GASOLINE ADDITIVE
"The worldwide glut of wine has become so huge that for the first time in history, France is distilling some of its higher-rated wines into fuel. It is a painful thing in a land where winemaking is a labor of love and the fruit of that labor is celebrated as much as any art. France has periodically turned oceans of lowly table wines into vinegar and ethanol. But bottles of quality French wine have been piling up on supermarket shelves and in vineyard cellars across the country, to the point that some of it is now cheaper than bottled water," quoting the New York Times Paris Bureau in the International Herald Tribune. link here

3. STEM CELL ADVANCES ANNOUNCED: "FDA APPROVES FIRST BRAIN STEM CELL TRANSPLANT"
"Federal regulators on Thursday [Oct. 20] approved what would be the first transplant of fetal stem cells into human brains, a procedure that if successful could open the door to treating a host of neural disorders. The transplant recipients will be children who suffer from a rare, fatal genetic disorder. The Food and Drug Administration said that doctors at Stanford University Medical Center can begin the testing on six children afflicted with Batten disease, a degenerative malady that renders its young victims blind, speechless, and paralyzed before it kills them," quoting the AP. link here

And:
"S. KOREAN STEM CELL CENTER DRAWS HUNDREDS"
"For the past few decades Kim Young-ja lived with the thought she would never walk again. Seeking what she sees as a chance for a cure, the 55-year-old South Korean joined hundreds of patients who applied Tuesday [Nov. 1] to take part in research with a worldwide stem cell center that hopes to cure hard-to-treat diseases with its trailblazing cloning technology," quoting the AP. link here

4. "STOP GLOBAL WARMING MARCH ON WASHINGTON"
"The Stop Global Warming Virtual March on Washington is a nonpolitical effort to bring all Americans together in one place, proving there is a vast consensus that global warming is here now and it is time for our country to start addressing it. With the support of leading scientists, political and religious leaders, prominent Americans and concerned citizens, the Virtual March on Washington will move across the United States via the Internet from one town to the next, showing the evidence of global warming's alarming affects, and highlighting real people's concerns and real solutions along the way," quoting the stopglobalwarming.org website. link here

5. "CENTURIES OF GLOBAL WARMING PROJECTED"
”If emissions of heat-trapping gases keep accumulating in the atmosphere at the current rate, there may be many centuries of warming and a near-total loss of Arctic tundra, a new climate study warns. Overall, the world would experience profound transformations, some potentially beneficial but many disruptive, and all at a pace rarely seen in nature, said the authors of the study, published today in The Journal of Climate. ‘The question is no longer whether we will need to address this problem, but when we will need to address the problem,’ said Kenneth Caldeira, an author of the study and a climate expert at the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology, based at Stanford University," quoting the NY Times. link here

7. BRAIN MAY BE ABLE TO 'SEE' WHAT EYES CAN’T
"Even when the brain can't consciously tell what the eyes are seeing, it may still be able to sense what's there. The finding suggests that the brain may have "blindsight" — an alternate way of processing visual information. That might help scientists better understand the nature of consciousness and suggest ways to restore some types of vision loss, according to Tony Ro, a psychology professor at Rice University in Houston," quoting the AP. link here

8. HONDA: FIRST EVER HYDROGEN-FUELED VEHICLE NOW ON LEASE
"You would never guess that Jon Spallino drives what is probably the most expensive car in this city known for automotive excess, or that he is the world's most technologically advanced commuter... He was at the wheel of his silver Honda FCX, a car worth about $1 million that looks like a cross between a compact - say, a Volkswagen Golf and a cinder block. The FCX is powered by hydrogen fuel cells, the futuristic technology that many automakers see as an eventual solution to the world's energy woes, though its real potential is a subject of vigorous debate inside and outside the auto industry," quoting The New York Times. link here

9. EARTH PASSING THROUGH SPACE DEBRIS CAUSING METOER SHOWERS
"Every year in late October and early November, he explains [meteor expert David Asher of the Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland], Earth passes through a river of space dust associated with Comet Encke. Tiny grains hit our atmosphere at 65,000 mph. At that speed, even a tiny smidgen of dust makes a vivid streak of light--a meteor--when it disintegrates. Because these meteors shoot out of the constellation Taurus, they're called Taurids," quoting NASA.com.

10. MEDIA IGNORED REPORT ISSUED BY GAO LAST WEEK ON USA'S 2004 ELECTION VOTER MACHINE SAFETY
"Last week the Government Accountability Office – the investigative unit of Congress – issued a major report on the safety of electronic voting machines. Although the report has received little attention in the corporate media, its findings have startled critics of electronic voting. There are three main problems the GAO found with the machines: First, some electronic voting systems did not encrypt cast ballots or system audit logs, and it was possible to alter both without being detected. Second, it was possible to alter the files that define how a ballot looks and works so that votes for one candidate could be recorded for a different candidate. Third, vendors installed uncertified versions of voting system software at the local level, " quoting Democracy Now.

The Free Press goes onto even more depth on this story:
"As a legal noose appears to be tightening around the Bush/Cheney/Rove inner circle, a shocking government report shows the floor under the legitimacy of their alleged election to the White House is crumbling. The latest critical confirmation of key indicators that the election of 2004 was stolen comes in an extremely powerful, penetrating report from the Government Accountability Office that has gotten virtually no mainstream media coverage. Nearly a year ago, senior Judiciary Committee Democrat John Conyers (D-MI) asked the GAO to investigate electronic voting machines as they were used during the November 2, 2004 presidential election. The request came amidst widespread complaints in Ohio and elsewhere that often shocking irregularities defined their performance. According to CNN, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee received "more than 57,000 complaints" following Bush's alleged re-election. Many such concerns were memorialized under oath in a series of sworn statements and affidavits in public hearings and investigations conducted in Ohio by the Free Press and other election protection organizations. The non-partisan GAO report has now found that, 'some of [the] concerns about electronic voting machines have been realized and have caused problems with recent elections, resulting in the loss and miscount of votes.'"

11. 'BIG BROTHER' FURTHER INVADING YOUR PRIVACY IN THE NAME OF SECURITY
"The State Department yesterday [Oct. 25] issued final rules for implanting electronic identification chips into all U.S. passports, despite continuing controversy over the security of the system and its impact on personal privacy. The regulations mean that as of October 2006, all new and renewed U.S. passports will contain radio frequency identification chips that will include a digital photo and all other information currently printed in passports," quoting the Washington Post.

12. CASE MADE THAT TWIN TOWERS DESTROYED BY CONTROLLED DEMOLITION WITH EXPLOSIVES
[Ed. Note: This writer rarely lists anything from Rense.com, yet have read this report from various sources and personally feel there is some merit to this theory. Always trust YOUR own knowingness.]
From Rense.com: “In two speeches to overflow crowds in New York last weekend [Oct. 15 & 16], notable theologian David Ray Griffin argued that recently revealed evidence seals the case that the Twin Towers and WTC-7 were destroyed by controlled demolition with explosives. Despite the many enduring mysteries of the 9/11 attacks, Dr. Griffin concluded, ‘It is already possible to know, beyond a reasonable doubt, one very important thing: The destruction of the World Trade Center was an inside job, orchestrated by terrorists within our own government.’ On Oct. 15th and 16th, New Yorkers filled two venues to hear the prominent theologian and author of two books on 9/11 give a presentation entitled "The Destruction of the Trade Towers: A Christian Theologian Speaks Out." link here

The weekend’s events were sponsored by NY911truth.org, WBAI and the Muslim-Jewish-Christian Alliance for 9/11 Truth (MUJCA-NET). “MUJCA-NET is a group of scholars, religious leaders and activists dedicated to uniting members of the Jewish, Christian, and Islamic faiths in pursuit of 9/11 truth. We believe that the process of joining together in search of the truth about 9/11 will bring enormous benefits, regardless of what truths we may discover. While our endorsers and supporters have different views about the probable level of US government complicity in 9/11, all of us agree that a new, honest investigation of the possibility of official complicity is a matter of the most urgent national and global importance.” link here

OF LOCAL NOTE
Correction to the November 1 Kleiner’s Korner Special Edition:
The Yelm Wal-Mart Supercenter application can now move forward WITHOUT city council approval because of the Hearings Examiner’s recommendation. The Examiner denied the SEPA appeal and issued a site plan review approval for the construction of a Wal-Mart Supercenter. What this means is that unless someone officially files an appeal to the Yelm City Council within two weeks and wins, the potential is that this 188,000 square foot Supercenter will be operational for Christmas, 2006 shoppers. Kleiner's Korner Special Edition For November 1, 2005
Dear Readers;
The following information is for Yelm area residents interested in the application for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter in city limits. Although this may not affect most readers, you may be interested in the event Wal-Mart targets (pun intended!) your home town....

"The Yelm Hearing Examiner issued on November 1, 2005, a decision in the matter of Wal-Mart’s application to construct a supercenter in Yelm and the Yelm Commerce Group’s appeal of the City’s issuance of a Mitigated Determination of Non-significance.

The Examiner denied the SEPA appeal and issued a site plan review approval for the construction of the Wal-Mart.

[Ed. Note: This means that unless there is an appeal by the Yelm Commerce Group or other parties, the corporation will be allowed to continue to the next step in this project].
