Update for Week of May 26, 2003
This is the weekend that America honors its women and men who gave their lives to defend this nation and its ideals. Memorial Day is the unofficial kickoff of summer vacations, travel and the outdoor season. As you are priming your barbeque grill, enjoying the outdoors and throwing those horseshoes, may I suggest that you pause with your family and give thanks for all of the bounty and abundance we have and for the people that gave their lives allowing us to experience this American Way. Have a grand Memorial Day Weekend!

1. Follow-up: A recent Update story from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on April 23, 2003 reported that Washington State is putting in guidelines to reduce mercury in its waters. New information has been reported that establishes a link now between autism and mercury. The following site educates the public on this issue: Click Here Here is the original Seattle P-I story of Governor Locke's mercury initiative: Click Here.

2. Follow-up: In the May 5th Update it was noted that Arcata, CA had outlawed compliance with the US Patriot Act by its city's officials. Now comes a CNN report that Arcata has made a law criminalizing any such compliance. Arcata's stand is mostly symbolic, since federal law trumps any local ordinance. Still, the notion of civic disobedience is drawing plenty of attention: Click Here And here is a must-see story regarding a provision in the Patriot Act. It's one that all cash payers will want to know about: "Paying cash triggers alert for terrorism in the new world." Click Here.

3. Sometimes Americans must go abroad to get news that is not circulated here. From the UK this week is a story that the whole Private Jessica Lynch POW rescue in Iraq was contrived. The BBC reveals new details of what their correspondent claims really happened: Click Here The BBC followed up with a TV program called War Spin and asked for viewer input. Some of the email responses are listed here: Click Here And the Pentagon has weighed in with its response to the BBC articles: Click Here.

4. Further on the issue of Washington, D.C. "spin" comes an article in The New York Times about how the "keepers" of the Bush image lift stagecraft to new heights, using the powers of television and technology to promote a presidency like never before. TV producers and cameramen are involved in this "presidential theater", like the presidential jet-fighter landing on the aircraft carrier Lincoln: Click Here.

5. During this week in 1955, May 25th to be exact, a category F5 tornado touched down in Blackwell, OK and then minutes later in Udall, KS, towns just miles apart from each other. Witnesses said the tornado sometimes glowed along its 25 mile path, where over 100 people were killed. An F5 tornado is the highest category on the Fujita damage scale, and it is Mother Nature's own torsion field. The National Weather Service and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) list 51 storms of this type in the U.S. from 1950 until today. A fascinating map pinpointing their location: Click Here FEMA, now a division of the Dept. of Homeland Security, posts its F5 tornado list: Click Here.

6. You heard it here first many months ago, as I have been mentioning the possibility of deflation creeping into the lexicon of our economy. Here are some articles raising the issue this week, while the U.S. Dollar hits new lows against the Euro ($1.17 USD to the Euro). An excellent Q/A on this: Click Here Even the Fed is now acknowledging it needs to fight this: Click Here.

7. Here on this site you have heard of the Beamer Picture Phone and Catch-a-Call, a dial-up computer device that lets one answer the phone while online, using the single phone line. Now, along comes Tell-a-phone, a new voice recognition device that will dial a preprogrammed phone number for you after you speak the person's name: Click Here Here are The Beamer and Catch-a-call sites, if you missed them previously: Click Here And: Click Here.

8. Paul Newman's daughter Nell was on NBC's "Today" show this week to share her new book, "The Newman's Own Organics Guide to a Good Life," which describes how living more environmentally conscious benefits you and your immediate surroundings. All after-tax profits from Newman's Own sales go to charity: Click Here And, the Newman's Own website: Click Here.

9. Next time you are in an airplane seat, look closely at the aircraft safety information card in the seat pocket in front of you. Most of these cards are produced by Safeair of Olympia, WA. The company's goal is to promote a heightened awareness of flying safety within the aviation community and the passenger public by providing the highest quality and most informative passenger safety information cards available. They have researched and studied what symbols are best understood and used by anyone who does not speak the language written on the card. Fascinating work! Wherever you board an aircraft, you'll see this local talent's creation. Check out their site: Click Here.

10. British researchers believe they have made a groundbreaking scientific discovery after apparently managing to "create" energy from hydrogen atoms. Take water and potash, add electricity and get -- a mystery. This is a must-read story: Click Here.

11. Follow-up: The May 5th Update contained a story about Irwin Schiff's book The Federal Mafia being banned by court order. Now comes word that Gene Chapman, an Austin, TX man is on a death-fast until the IRS responds to his question, "Where is MY liability in the law?" Inspired by Mr. Schiff, here is Mr. Chapman's website: Click Here.

Here is the link which addresses that question: Click Here.

10. In another follow-up to a previous story and your requests for an update, the Gerald Hillman/Richard Perle relationship and projects appear to have conflicts of interest, according to a major Los Angeles Times story out this past week. It is a very thorough investigative report on these men and their involvement with Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld's Defense Policy Board (DPB). The article reports they got a classified presentation from the super-secret Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) on crises in North Korea and Iraq. The article further questions Hillman's credentials for being on the DPB based on the DPB's charter, his DIA access, and his cozy relationship with Perle. Here is the full transcript: Click Here.

11. Mentioned recently was the Carrboro, NC resolution against the U.S. Patriot Act and the protection of Carrboro citizens' civil rights and liberties from the federal government. Other cities are looking at joining the chorus in enacting similar resolutions, including people pushing for this in Olympia, WA. Here is the Carrboro Resolution that could be used as a model for this nationwide: Click Here.

12. Remember the San Francisco man's photo of a mysterious purple streak hitting Shuttle Columbia seven minutes before it disintegrated? When mentioned here in February, I stated that "since he turned it [the photo] over to NASA, no one would hear about it again." This week that became an even more apparent potential when civilian members of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board were put on NASA's payroll, so the panel can use government secrecy regulations to withhold testimony from the public about the space shuttle disaster. HUM: Click Here Just in case you missed this San Francisco Chronicle story from February, 2003, here is the link: Click Here.

Update for Week of May 12, 2003
Greetings! See Number 6 below for information on a lunar eclipse this week.

1. As you know, this area has been reserved for details of the SARS situation the last few weeks. In SARS news not widely known here in the U.S., some airports and other establishments are employing a device to check the surface body temperature of people, often times with the person being unaware, via an infrared-heat sensing device manufactured by Flir, Inc, with the purpose of screening out potential SARS infections.
This was featured in a story on NBC's TODAY Show on April 30th. Here is the Flir site:

Update for Week of May 5, 2003
With government and religion continuing to play its games, science is moving ahead into new frontiers amidst all of this and leaving them in the dust. Therefore, the first 5 items in this report will center on the games, while the balance will be devoted to science.

1. The SARS-linked travel warning for Toronto issued by the WHO has been rescinded after extensive requests for review by that government of Canadian SARS procedures & SARS controls. However, advisories are still in effect for Beijing, Hong Kong & 2 provinces in China: Click HereNow, the worldwide death rate for SARS has jumped to 10%: Click Here.

2. The Cheney/Hillman/Kissinger/Perle, et al, stories I started mentioning here very early in the year and much prior to The New Yorker magazine article of March 17th that caused a firestorm, still have "legs." And new revelations are surfacing about how these men and their colleagues negotiated AND locked-up contracts for rebuilding Iraq long before the first bomb was even dropped. This past week, the CBS NEWS program 60 MINUTES ran this subject as its lead story, highlighting the collusion between military and industry and pointing out how the laws were specifically written to protect and engender this kind of activity. In an interview with Charles Lewis, executive director of the Center for Public Integrity, a non-profit organization that investigates corruption and abuse of power by government and corporations, Lewis puts all of this in context with his comments. This report shines the light on VP Cheney and Defense Policy Board members with their "cozy relationships ... that have won more than $76 billion in defense contracts. And that's just in the last two years." The broadcast displayed the complete list of Defense Policy Board members, however, that list was not printed on the transcript of the story on the 60 MINUTES website, and is listed below. To quote CBS correspondent Steve Croft, "Given all the taxpayer money involved, you might think the process for awarding those contracts would be open and competitive. Well, so far, it has been none of the above. And the early winners in the sweepstakes to rebuild Iraq have one thing in common: lots of very close friends in very high places." Here is the complete transcript: Click HereHere is the Center for Public Integrity's website: Click HereAnd, the Center's take on this story: Click HereThe Defense Policy Board member list and their aasociations: Click Here.

3. In last week's Update, I mentioned that Arcata, CA had passed an ordinance that outlaws voluntary compliance with the Patriot Act. Now, ABC News is reporting that residents of Carrboro, NC have pressured the City Council to pass a "Bill of Rights defense resolution" saying what concerns them the most is something called the "sneak and peek" warrant. It allows federal investigators to come into your home without your knowing, search everything, and tell you why they were there, in a "reasonable" amount of time. The Carrboro resolution requires federal investigators who visit the town to report to city hall and state their business, and it directs local police to stand in the way of any unreasonable searches or seizures. Ed. Note: To stand up to government intrusion and excesses IS the American Way: Click HereAnd while on the subject of government excesses, now a report has been released this week that ten days before Timothy McVeigh was executed, lawyers for FBI lab employees sent an urgent letter to the attention of Attorney General John Ashcroft alleging that a key prosecution witness in the Oklahoma City bombing trial might have given false testimony about forensic evidence and this information was never given to McVeigh. Oh, an that letter to Ashcroft? It was never seen by him. Ed. Note: Read this story. This is pathetic and one reads about false or mishandled evidence in government trials more and more. "Truth is the first casualty of war". Any battle, courtroom or in the field! Click Here.

4. And speaking of this Administration's insistence on whittling away the Constitution, now at the request of the Justice Dept., a U.S. District Judge in Las Vegas issued a temporary restraining order last month barring an author from selling his book The Federal Mafia: How the Government Illegally Imposes and Unlawfully Collects Income Taxes. The IRS says at least 3,100 people have used the precise language published in Irwin Schiff's book to claim on their tax filing that they have zero income. Based on those returns alone the government says, $56 million in tax revenue has been lost between 1999 and 2001. Ed. Note: There must be some truth to this book as Betty Becker of the American Library Assn. says she cannot think of an example when a judge has banned a book, a violation of the Constitution's guarantee of free speech. Here is Mr. Schiff's website on which the judge ordered him to list the court order: Click HereAnd here is a $50,000 challenge from Mr. Schiff asking for proof that Americans are liable to pay income tax: Click HereAnd The Seattle Times spin on all of this: Click HerePuget Sound bookseller Amazon.com had sold thousands of copies of this book until last month. Now, here's its response: Click Here.

5. A report out last month about Black Holes. Notorious for gorging on matter, the supermassive black holes at the cores of galaxies may blow out as much material as they swallow: Click Here.

6. A community developed with an emphasis on self-reliance and self-sufficiency has been established in the Northeastern Illinois town of Stelle and The Stelle Telephone Co. has announced it is America's first completely solar powered mutual: Click Here.

7. And speaking of self- sufficiency, check out the website of McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC. (MBDC) which states, "Instead of designing cradle-to-grave products, dumped in landfills at the end of their life, MBDC transforms industry by creating products for cradle-to-cradle cycles, whose materials are perpetually circulated in closed loops. Maintaining materials in closed loops maximizes material value without damaging ecosystems." Fascinating concept: Click Here.

8. Electronics buff Dick Garrison of Juneau, AK has built a three-quarter-of-a-million-watt generating Tesla coil in his home. Here is his fantastic story: Click HereTesla Coils are air-cored resonant transformers which generate very high voltages at high frequency. Tesla's goal was to demonstrate the possibility of transmitting electrical power via long sparks, without using wires. Here is a site about Tesla Coil components and how it works: Click Here.

9. Using mind over matter, paralyzed patients are being taught to use their brain waves to move a white ball on a computer screen so they can communicate, thanks to German neuroscientist Niels Birbaumer: Click Here.

10. With 2 earthquakes occurring within 24 hours last week & 200 miles apart and Yelm in between them, this is a good opportunity to remind you of the University of Washington Seismology Lab website: Click HereAdditionally, the website for the West Coast & Alaska Tsunami Warning Center: Click HereHere are the stories for the local earthquakes. First, a 3.9 earthquake in Portland, OR on April 24: Click HereAnd a 4.8 shaker 28 miles west of Poulsbo, WA on the Olympic Peninsula: Click HereAnd: Click Here.
