KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JUNE 29, 2009
Introduction
A. No Korner in 8 years of doing this has ever garnered the shear volume of e-mails received after the Michael Jackson Special Edition June 25th. All but one of the notes received were from those touched by the piece. Amazing to remember that Michael was already a superstar & 26 years of age when he co-produced “We Are The World” released in 1985.
Bless Michael Jackson for bridging Blues & Pop and in doing so, bridged yet another racial chasm with his music; starting with our youth and moving beyond to impact all ages, whether you liked him, his music & dance, or not.

B. “Simon Cowell wants to set the record straight.
In a letter to the Daily Mail on Saturday[ June 19], the “American Idol” and “Britain’s Got Talent” judge weighed in on the controversies surrounding the UK show, which gained a worldwide audience via YouTube this year...
And as for Susan Boyle, the Scottish singer who has captured the world’s attention but has had troubles dealing with the pressures of fame, Cowell also said he could’ve done things better. “It has become clear to me that we didn’t handle the situation with Susan as well as we could have,” Cowell continued,” quoting Access Hollywood. link here

C. "In the United States, Independence Day (commonly known as the Fourth of July) is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain” and is “the only holiday that celebrates the United States”, from Wikipedia. link here
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY - INDEPENDENCE DAY IN THE USA!

1. “THE GRID WE LIVE IN”
“What is the Matrix? It might be more than a cult movie classic, if you side with Nobel-winning physicist Frank Wilczek. In his new book, "The Lightness of Being," Wilczek sets forth the concept that at its most basic level, our universe exists as a vibrant energy field he calls "the Grid." (He says he might have considered calling it the Matrix, "but the sequels tarnished that candidate.")...

In Wilczek's view, mass arises because the Grid is permeated with a not-yet-understood property that "slows down" some of the interactions in the field, just as electrons are slowed down in a superconducting medium. In the medium known as the Grid, we perceive that slowed-down quality as mass,” quoting MSNBC. link here
.

2. “35,000-YEAR-OLD FLUTE FOUND IN GERMANY”
“A bird-bone flute unearthed in a German cave was carved some 35,000 years ago and is the oldest handcrafted musical instrument yet discovered, archaeologists say, offering the latest evidence that early modern humans in Europe had established a complex and creative culture.

A team led by University of Tuebingen archaeologist Nicholas Conard assembled the flute from 12 pieces of griffon vulture bone scattered in a small plot of the Hohle Fels cave in southern Germany.

Together, the pieces comprise a 8.6-inch instrument with five holes and a notched end. Conard said the flute was 35,000 years old.

'It's unambiguously the oldest instrument in the world,' Conard told The Associated Press this week. His findings were published online Wednesday by the journal Nature,” quoting ABC News. link here

3. “DOCTORS BAFFLED, INTRIGUED BY GIRL WHO DOESN’T SEEM TO AGE”
“Brooke Greenberg is the size of an infant, with the mental capacity of a toddler.
She turned 16 in January.
‘Why doesn't she age?’ Howard Greenberg, 52, asked of his daughter.’"Is she the fountain of youth?’
Such questions are why scientists are fascinated by Brooke. Among the many documented instances of children who fail to grow or develop in some way, Brooke's case may be unique, according to her doctor, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine pediatrician Lawrence Pakula, in Baltimore,” quoting ABC News. link here
.

4. “MAN STRUCK BY LIGHTENING LIVES TO TELL TALE”
“Few people are ever hit by lightning. Even fewer live to tell the tale. Wendell Hansel is one of them.
Hansel, 37, said he was going outside to check his boat Sunday afternoon when the world exploded in front of him,” from WLWT –NBC in Cincinnati: link here
.

5. PLANET ‘SPOTTED’ IN ANDROMEDA GALAXY”
“Astronomers believe they may have discovered the first planet ever detected in another galaxy. The new world was apparently glimpsed in the closest giant spiral galaxy to the Milky Way, Messier 31 in the constellation of Andromeda. It lies an incredible 2.5 million light-years away - too far normally to be seen. But it revealed itself thanks to a phenomenon called microlensing where the gravitational field of an object closer to Earth acts like a magnifying glass,” quoting Scientific American. link here

KLEINER'S KORNER SPECIAL EDITION FOR JUNE 25, 2009
Dear Readers;

No matter what each of us may feel about Michael Jackson's flaws, his were no different than our own. These define the human condition that are all of our roadblocks towards evolution. His were just more publicized than ours!

We have a generation alive today that truly do not know the contribution that this man made to our evolving society; emerging from the ignorance, blindness and prejudice of the inequities amongst races.

Let THIS and his whole genre of works be Michael Jackson's legacy. That there be no one untouched and unmoved by this man's co-production of this piece the world-over is fitting this day, I say!

For those that are too young to know or to jar your memory from 24 years ago [yes, 24 years ago; Michael was 26!]:

"USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa), was the name under which forty-five predominantly U.S. artists, led by Harry Belafonte, Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie, recorded the hit single "We Are the World" in 1985. The song was a US and UK Number One for the collective in April of that year. The considerable profits from the enterprise went to the USA for Africa Foundation, which used them for the relief of famine and disease in Africa; critics, however, claim that this money went directly to the (often military) governments of the affected countries rather than the people. A recording of the live performance was released with the Live Aid DVD set released on November 8, 2004," quoting YouTube. ">link here

And, the final released version of the song went viral & touched the world in 1985 long before cell phones, laptops, I-Phones, Twitter, Facebook & Blogs! click ">link here here

Bless Michael Jackson for bridging Blues & Pop and in doing so, bridged yet another racial chasm with his music, starting with our youth and moving beyond to all ages.

"THERE COMES A TIME, WHEN WE HEED A CERTAIN CALL, WHEN THE WORLD MUST COME TOGETHER AS ONE..."

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JUNE 22, 2009
On Friday, June 19th, President Barack Obama brought some men (and a bunch of kids!) to the White House to talk about fatherhood. Check out a video of the event: link here

1. “TEEN OUTSMARTS DOCTORS IN SCIENCE CLASS”
“When doctors didn't give a Washington state high school student the answers she wanted, she took matters into her own hands.

Eighteen-year-old Jessica Terry, brought slides of her own intestinal tissue into her AP science class and correctly diagnosed herself with Crohn's disease…

So when local pathologists stopped in to teach students in her Biomedical Problems class how to analyze slides, the high school senior decided to give her own intestines a look.
What she found? A large dark area showing inflammation, otherwise known as a granuloma--a sure sign of the intestinal disease,” quoting NBC.

4. “THE UNIVERSE IN YOUR HEAD”
“Biomedical researcher Robert Lanza has been on the frontier of cloning and stem cell studies for more than a decade, so he's well-acclimated to controversy. But his book "Biocentrism" is generating controversy on a different plane by arguing that our consciousness plays a central role in creating the cosmos.
‘By treating space and time as physical things, science picks a completely wrong starting point for understanding the world,’ Lanza declares…
Lanza admits that the reviews haven't all been glowing, particularly among some physicists. ‘Their response has been much how you'd expect priests to respond to stem cell research,’ he told me Monday [June 15th].
Other physicists, however, point out that Lanza's view is fully in line with the perspective from quantum mechanics that the observer plays a huge role in how reality is observed,”
quoting MSNBC’s Cosmic Log. link here

5. “NASA KICK-STARTING LUNAR SCIENCE”
“If you're in the planning stages of sending people back to the moon, as NASA is, you'd better know as much as possible about it.
That's one of the reasons NASA launched, in late 2007, the Lunar Science Institute (LSI), an organization with an annual budget of $10 million for the study and research of the moon, as well as the role of supporting and inspiring new generations of lunar scientists.
According to Greg Schmidt, LSI's deputy director, it is a "virtual" institute with a staff of just eight or nine people at any given moment. LSI is focused on collecting and sharing Web data and communications, chiefly among the scientists doing research on behalf of the institute, and who work in teams around and outside the country that are competitively selected,” quoting CNET. link here

“Tomoji Tanabe, the world's oldest man, died in his sleep at his home in southern Japan on Friday, a city official said. He was 113...
Tanabe, who was born Sept. 18, 1895, had eight children — five sons and three daughters. The former city land surveyor also had 25 grandchildren, 53 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren, according to a statement from the Miyakonojo city. He was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest man when he was 111 years old,” quoting the AP. link here

1. “UN: HIGHER PRICES PUSH HUNGRY OVER 1 BILLION”
“High food prices have pushed another 105 million people into hunger in the first half of 2009, the head of the U.N. World Food Program said Friday, raising the total number of hungry people to over 1 billion.
Urging rich nations at a meeting of the Group of Eight's development ministers not cut back on aid, Josette Sheeran told Reuters the world faced a "human catastrophe" as more and more people struggle to eat a decent meal,” quoting Reuters. link here

2. “FLYING FOR EVER”
“WHEN an airliner takes off for a transatlantic flight it needs to carry some 80 tonnes of fuel, which accounts for around one-fifth of its weight. On really long flights, fuel can account for 40% of a plane’s take-off weight, so that around 20% of the fuel is used to carry the rest of the fuel. Each tonne of fuel burned also produces 3.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Yet inside a hanger at a Swiss airfield is the prototype of an aircraft (illustrated above) that does not use any fuel at all. The wings of this aircraft are almost as big as those of an airliner, but they are covered in a film of solar cells that convert sunlight into electricity to drive its engines,” from The Economist:

3. “...RESVERATROL DEMONSTRATES SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS”
“The benefits of alcohol are all about moderation. Low to moderate drinking – especially of red wine – appears to reduce all causes of mortality, while too much drinking causes multiple organ damage. A mini-review of recent findings on red wine's polyphenols, particularly one called resveratrol, will be published in the September issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research; the review is also available at Early View,” quoting ScienceDaily. link here
.

4. “BRIDGING THE GAP TO QUANTUM WORLD”
“Scientists have "entangled" the motions of pairs of atoms for the first time.
Entanglement is an effect in quantum mechanics, a relatively new branch of physics that is based more in probability than in classical laws.
It describes how properties of two or more objects can be inextricably linked over "vast" distances.
The results, published in Nature, further bridge the gap between the world of quantum mechanics and the laws of everyday experience.
This is the first time entanglement has been seen in a so-called "mechanical system".
The phenomenon suggests that a measurement performed on one object can affect the measurement on another object some distance away. It also implies that the behaviour of two separate objects is linked by some unseen connection - an idea that Albert Einstein described as "spooky",” quoting the BBC. link here
.

5. BLACK HOLES MAKING NEWS
A. “CLOSE-UP LOOK AT BLACK HOLE REVEALS FEEDING FRENZY”
“Astronomers are getting a close-up look at a cosmic eating machine: a spinning black hole that devours the mass equivalent of two Earths per hour, verging on the limit of its feeding ability…

The behemoth of interest in the new close-up study, which will be published in the May 28 issue of the journal Nature, lies at the center of a distant active galaxy known as 1H0707-495. Using data from the European Space Agency's XMM-Newton observatory, astronomers analyzed X-rays emitted during the black hole's feeding frenzy,” quoting Space.com.

B. “A REAL WHOPPER: BLACK HOLE IS MOST MASSIVE”
“The most massive black hole yet weighed lurks at the heart of the relatively nearby giant galaxy M87...

The discovery was announced here [Pasadena] today [June 8th] at the 214th meeting of the American Astronomical Society,” from Space.com: link here
.

6. BRAIN STUDIES REVEAL NEW KNOWLEDGE
A. “SLEEP FOUND TO REPAIR AND REORGANIZE BRAIN”
“We know why we eat, drink, breathe, and move around, but no one can explain why we need to sleep. What does seven or eight hours of snoozing really do for us? Van Savage at the Harvard Medical School and Geoffrey West of the Santa Fe Institute in New Mexico believe they have found a good answer.
One favorite explanation is that sleep is for resting the body. But as Steven Strogatz, a mathematician at Cornell University wisely points out, lying still for eight hours is no substitute for this strange state in which we spend decades of our lives ‘immobilized, unconscious, and vulnerable,’" from Harvard Science. link here

B. “MEDITATION FOUND TO INCREASE BRAIN SIZE”
“Researchers at Harvard, Yale, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have found the first evidence that meditation can alter the physical structure of our brains. Brain scans they conducted reveal that experienced meditators boasted increased thickness in parts of the brain that deal with attention and processing sensory input.
In one area of gray matter, the thickening turns out to be more pronounced in older than in younger people. That's intriguing because those sections of the human cortex, or thinking cap, normally get thinner as we age,” from Harvard Science. link here
.

7. “A WAKE-UP CALL ON WATER USE”
“Move over, carbon, the next shoe to drop in the popular awareness of eco-issues is the “water footprint.”
That’s the word in environmental circles these days. Just as the image of a heavy carbon foot made it possible for the masses to grasp the power of carbon-dioxide emissions, water footprint is the phrase now drawing attention to the impact of human behavior regarding water.
‘H2O is the next CO2,’ says Nicholas Eisenberger, managing principal of GreenOrder, a consulting firm that specializes in sustainable business. As a phrase, water footprint ‘will probably move more quickly through the public mind as it catches on,’ he says, because water is more tangible than carbon,” quoting the Christian Science Monitor.

8. NEW CLOUDS PHOTOGRAPHED
A. “NEW CLOUD TYPE DISCOVERED?”
“An "asperatus" cloud rolls over New Zealand's South Island in an undated picture.

This apparently new class of clouds is still a mystery. But experts suspect asperatus clouds' choppy undersides may be due to strong winds disturbing previously stable layers of warm and cold air.

Asperatus clouds may spur the first new classification in the World Meteorological Organization's International Cloud Atlas since the 1950s, Gavin Pretor-Pinney said,” from National Geographic. link here

“Scientists at MIT are studying color-changing cuttlefish. An understanding of how these fascinating creatures can change color in less than a second could result in electronic ink and cheap TV screens that could use “less than one-hundredth the power of traditional television screens.”

It’s a great example of how we can develop greener products by studying and mimicking biology and nature,” quoting these two videos on Mercola.

10. “OUR REAL PRISON PROBLEM”
ED. NOTE: A MUST-READ FOR ALL AMERICANS!
“The United States, with 5 percent of the world's population, houses nearly 25 percent of the world's prisoners. As Webb has explained it, "Either we're the most evil people on earth or we're doing something wrong." We incarcerate 756 inmates per 100,000 residents—nearly five times the world average. Approximately one in every 31 adults in the United States is in prison, in jail or on supervised release. Local, state and federal spending on corrections amounts to about $70 billion per year and has increased 40 percent over the past 20 years.
Webb has no problem locking up the real baddies. He just wants us to recognize that warehousing the nation's mentally ill and drug addicts in crowded correctional facilities tends mostly to create a mass of meaner, more violent, less employable people at the exit. The Justice Department estimates that 16 percent of the adult inmates in American prisons—more than 350,000 of those incarcerated—suffer from mental illness; the percentage in juvenile custody is even higher. Justice statistics for 2007 showed that nearly 60 percent of the state prisoners serving time for a drug offense had no history of violence, and four out of five drug arrests were for drug possession, not sales.
Webb also reminds us that while drug use varies little by ethnic group, African-Americans—estimated at 14 percent of regular drug users—make up 56 percent of those in state prison for drug crimes,” quoting Newsweek. link here

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF JUNE 8, 2009
Dear Readers;

A special “thank you” to those of you who came up and introduced yourselves to me in France last week. I found wonderful to connect with the faces and names of so many Korner readers. You touched my heart with your outpouring of support.
Thank you for your interest!

1. “THE FUTURE OF TRANSPORTATION”
“This week in Leipzig, the city of Leibnitz, Fichte, Wagner and Nietzsche, the OECD organized a fascinating summit for transportation ministers from the whole world. Company heads from the principal enterprises of the automobile, rail, naval and aviation industries were also in attendance. [The] OECD-sponsored forum [was] entitled "Transport for a Global Economy, Challenges & Opportunities in the Downturn," quoting L’Express. link here

2. “NEW MEMORY MATERIAL MAY HOLD DATA FOR ONE BILLION YEARS”
“When it comes to data storage, density and durability have always moved in opposite directions -- the greater the density the shorter the durability. For example, information carved in stone is not dense but can last thousands of years, whereas today’s silicon memory chips can hold their information for only a few decades.

Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and the University of California (UC) Berkeley have smashed this tradition with a new memory storage medium that can pack thousands of times more data into one square inch of space than conventional chips and preserve this data for more than a billion years!” quoting Science Daily. link here
.

3. “PRIVACY STUDY SHOWS GOOGLE’S EYES ARE EVERYWHERE”
“A U.C. Berkeley report shows that most Internet users don’t understand web site privacy policies, and that major online businesses like Google Inc. freely gather data and share it with affiliated businesses via loopholes in those policies.
Using trackers called “web bugs,” third parties collect user data from many popular web sites, and sites often allow this, even though their privacy policies say they don’t share user data with others...
Ashkan Soltani, Travis Pinnick and Joshua Gomez of the university’s information school wrote the study, published Monday [June 1],” quoting the San Francisco Chronicle.

4. CELL PHONE & BLACKBERRY WARNINGS
A. “THE SPY IN YOUR HAND”
“Don't talk: your cell phone may be eavesdropping. Thanks to recent developments in "spy phone" software, a do-it-yourself spook can now wirelessly transfer a wiretapping program to any mobile phone. The programs are inexpensive, and the transfer requires no special skill. The would-be spy needs to get his hands on your phone to press keys authorizing the download, but it takes just a few minutes—about the time needed to download a ringtone.
This new generation of -user-friendly spy-phone software has become widely available in the last year—and it confers stunning powers. The latest programs can silently turn on handset microphones even when no call is being made, allowing a spy to listen to voices in a room halfway around the world. Targets are none the wiser: neither call logs nor phone bills show records of the secretly transmitted data,” quoting Newsweek. link here

B. “BLACKBERRY MAKER WARNS ON SECURITY VULNERABILITY”
“BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd has issued a security patch for the popular device, whose users include U.S. President Barack Obama, warning that it is vulnerable to attacks by hackers,” quoting Reuters. link here
.

5. “LOOKING UP THE FUNNEL OF A TORNADO”
From the Weather Channel on MSNBC:

6. “POLLUTION CAN CHANGE YOUR DNA IN 3 DAYS, STUDY SUGGESTS”
“Breathing in polluted air may wreak havoc on our DNA, reprogramming genes in as few as three days and causing increased rates of cancer and other diseases….
The same damage may occur in city dwellers exposed to normal air, the researchers say.
Particulate matter includes suspended, tiny bits of dust, metal, or soot in the air, which can lodge deep in the lungs. Exposure to the substance has been linked to respiratory diseases, lung cancer, and heart problems.
Scientists know little about how inhaling particulate matter can cause health problems, according to lead study author Andrea Baccarelli of the University of Milan,” quoting National Geographic. link here
.

7. "YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS: HOW TO KEEP YOUR BRAIN YOUNG”
“"Gray matter drops as we age," explains Arthur Kramer, professor of human perception and performance at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Gray matter is the brain tissue that's rich in nerve cells. "It drops as we get older," says Kramer. "It's dropping as we speak."
How can you preserve your brain and maybe even ward off Alzheimer's or other dementias?
An explosion of recent studies offers tantalizing evidence,” quoting CSPI’s Nutrition Action newsletter. link here
.

8. “WHY CHIMPS, MONKEY’S DON’T DEVELOP ALZHEIMER’S”
“The answer to this puzzle could yield valuable insight into how Alzheimer's develops and progresses, and now researchers report they may have a clue. They report their finding in the latest issue of the journal Neurobiology of Aging.
They found that a "tag" molecule used to track plaque build-up latches easily onto plaques in human brains but not in those of apes and monkeys, suggesting that there is a basic structural difference between the two types of plaque.
Figuring out the difference, they said, could lead to ways to render human amyloid plaques as harmless in human brains as they are in the brains of other primates,” quoting Health Day. link here
.

9. “STEP BACK AND YOUR BRAIN WILL STEP FORWARD”
“According to a team of Dutch scientists, walking backward helps people think more clearly.
The study, published in the journal Psychological Science, tested the ability of 38 men and women to quickly name the colors in which different words were displayed. During the tests, participants were told to step four paces to the left, right, backward or forward. In a subset of the trickier trials (ones where the words didn't relate in any way to the colors they were displayed in) performance was quickest when the subjects stepped four paces backward.
‘Backward locomotion appears to be a very powerful trigger to mobilize cognitive resources,’ concluded the authors, of Radboud University Nijmegen. ‘Thus, whenever you encounter a difficult situation, stepping backward may boost your capability to deal with it effectively,’" quoting the LA Times. link here

10. AN AMAZING STORY – AN AMAZING ATTITUDE!
“At the age of 97 years and 4 months, Shigeaki Hinohara is one of the world's longest-serving physicians and educators. Hinohara's magic touch is legendary: Since 1941 he has been healing patients at St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo and teaching at St. Luke's College of Nursing. After World War II, he envisioned a world-class hospital and college springing from the ruins of Tokyo; thanks to his pioneering spirit and business savvy, the doctor turned these institutions into the nation's top medical facility and nursing school. Today he serves as chairman of the board of trustees at both organizations. Always willing to try new things, he has published around 150 books since his 75th birthday, including one "Living Long, Living Good" that has sold more than 1.2 million copies. As the founder of the New Elderly Movement, Hinohara encourages others to live a long and happy life, a quest in which no role model is better than the doctor himself,” quoting Japan Times.

RAMTHA STUDENT NEWS
A. No other single statement shows the contempt of Yelm’s City Hall towards JZ Knight, RSE, and our students than that of Councilman Bob Isom in the newspaper last week, “I have every right to disregard JZ Knight, Ramtha and any of the so-called students who do not live within the city limits when they attempt to influence decisions of the city council.”
That is a telling comment since we property owners living outside the city pay Yelm Schools, Yelm Cemetery & Yelm Timberland Library taxes. Is this then taxation without representation?
Amazing with all of the contributions our students add to the Yelm Community; both in their own businesses operating within Yelm & our folks spending dollars within Yelm and paying city sales taxes. I will have more on this on the Yelm Community Blog early in the week!

B. Correction to last week’s story:
2. USING MIND TO CONTROL MATTER
A new toy was demonstrated on ABC TV with a device that reads mind waves to levitate – a ping-pong ball, with absolute focus! From ABC News May 22, 2009. Robin Roberts says on-air, “Focus, baby, focus!”
[Ed. Note: A reader wrote to day this has nothing to do with levitation - it's "simply" a biofeedback device, with "flashy output". Probably more successful as a training device, since the feedback is quite graphic - but still totally unrelated to levitation.]

2. “VIRGIN SEES SPACE TOURISM AS JUST THE BEGINNING”
“Long-haul trips could be made in spaceships instead of planes in 20 years' time if Virgin's efforts to commercialize space travel succeed, the president of Virgin Galactic said.
Will Whitehorn said Virgin's plans to take tourists into space were just a first stage that could open up a range of possibilities for the company including space science, computer server farms in space and replacing long-haul flights.
Virgin Galactic, part of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, has collected $40 million in deposits from would-be space tourists including physicist Stephen Hawking and ex-racing driver Niki Lauda, and hopes to start commercial trips within two years,” quoting Reuters.

3. “RIGHT WHALES BREAK RECORD BIRTH”
“Right whales have plenty to celebrate this Mother's Day — the sea moms gave birth to a record 39 calves this spring.
The New England Aquarium said Friday [May 8th] that the birth surge breaks the old record of 31 and shows much improvement from 2000, when only one calf was born.
Each birthing season is important because right whales number fewer than 400 and are among the most endangered whales in the world,” quoting the AP. link here

4. “SCIENTISTS DISCOVER A NEARLY EARTH-SIZED PLANET”
“In the search for Earth-like planets, astronomers zeroed in Tuesday on two places that look awfully familiar to home. One is close to the right size. The other is in the right place. European researchers said they not only found the smallest exoplanet ever, called Gliese 581 e, but realized that a neighboring planet discovered earlier, Gliese 581 d, was in the prime habitable zone for potential life.
"The Holy Grail of current exoplanet research is the detection of a rocky, Earth-like planet in the 'habitable zone,'" said Michel Mayor, an astrophysicist at Geneva University in Switzerland.
An American expert called the discovery of the tiny planet ‘extraordinary,’" quoting the AP. link here
.

5. “THE MOBILE PHONE AS SELF-INFLICTED SURVEILLANCE”
“Like the breadcrumbs in Hansel and Gretel, mobile phones leave a trail wherever they go. Practically everybody can be tracked via this trail, and the beauty of it all is, we're effectively tracking ourselves.
By design, phones pass their location on to local base stations. You can gauge how effectively the networks can track you by requesting your personal information from your network provider using a data subject access under the Data Protection Act, or by just running Google Mobile Maps on your phone. The smaller 3G cells in central London give an even better location than on GSM,” quoting UK’s The Register. link here
.

6. “THE STRANGE CONCEPT OF WHITE HOLES”
“Think of a white hole as an “anti-black hole,” according to Cornell University’s Curious About Astronomy Web site. So if black holes are places where matter is sucked in, white holes could be where it spews out, like water through a fire hose…

Another way to look at it is through the waterfall analogy. If you think of a black hole as space falling down one side of a ravine, imagine it bouncing off the bottom and climbing back up the other side, said Andrew Hamilton, a professor of astrophysics at the University of Colorado, Boulder…

The concept of white holes is totally theoretical and most people don’t give it much credence, McClintock added.
‘Thousands of astronomers are just grinding their brains away on black holes,’ he said. ‘You compare that to a white hole, I don’t think you’ll find one astronomer grinding his brain away,’” quoting SciTechBlog on CNN:

8. “10 DIETARY TIPS FOR THOSE AGED 100+”
“Britain's oldest woman Florence Baldwin, who turns 113 on Tuesday, puts her longevity down to a daily fried egg sandwich. It's one of many dietary tips from those who have reached three figures.
Everyone wants to live to a ripe old age - and it doesn't take a dietary expert to know that eating healthily does that ambition no harm.
But ask anyone who has actually reached the magic 100 how they got there, and their dietary tips don't always square with the official advice. So we asked Dr Elisabeth Weichselbaum, of the British Nutrition Foundation, to cast an eye over a selection of centenarians' staples,” quoting the BBC.
[Ed. Note: Ramtha has often said it isn't what we eat that is bad for us -
it is our attitudes and beliefs that make it so. HMMM!
Perhaps it is time to re-think our thinking. Remember when he told us to eat Twinkie & drinks Cokes? link here

9. “STANFORD BIOLOGISTS RAP ABOUT WHAT MAKE US HUMAN”
“Here, two Stanford biologists, Derrick Davis and Tom McFadden bring rap to the horrifically complicated world of gene regulation. Rather than differences in structural genes, it is the regulation of genes that is thought to play a major role in steering a developing embryo into one species or another,” quoting UK’s Guardian.
[Ed. Note: I asked Stanford Grad & personal friend Dr. Karriem Ali for his take om this finding:
"Rapping and rhyming is a very ancient and effective form of communication. It gives structure to the wording of an idea that greatly facilitates retention.

I can flawlessly recall song and lyrics from my days at Harvard and Stanford, while the content of so many scholarly lectures is mostly lost to recall. Like television, rap is a medium with global popular appeal that could be applied to enhance learning across the spectrum from the ADD child to the genius."] link here
