1. “NEW U. S. SWINE FLU CASES SPREAD PANDEMIC FEARS” “The Department of Health and Human Services has declared a public health emergency in connection with the swine flu outbreak that has killed people in Mexico, Janet Napolitano, director of Homeland Security said today [April 26]. The number of cases confirmed in the United States by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now 20, including eight New York City high school students. Other cases are in Ohio, California, Texas and Kansas. Patients have ranged in age from 9 to over 50. … The World Health Organization chief said Saturday that the strain has "pandemic potential," and it might be too late to contain a sudden outbreak… Health officials are concerned because people appear to have no immunity to the virus, a combination of bird, swine and human influenzas. The virus also presents itself like other swine flus, but none of the U.S. cases appear to involve direct contact with pigs, Eberhart-Phillips said.” quoting MSNBC.

2. “ITALIAN EARTHQUAKE: EXPERT’S WARNINGS WERE DISMISSED AS SCAREMONGERING” “An Italian scientist, Giampaolo Giuliani, predicted the earthquake which has killed at least 92 people in the Abruzzo region but he was reported to the police for scaremongering, it has emerged,” quoting UK’s Telegraph.
link here .
3. “ITALIAN SCIENTIST, TURNING 100, STILL WORKS” “Rita Levi Montalcini, a Nobel Prize-winning scientist, said Saturday [April 18] that even though she is about to turn 100, her mind is sharper than it was she when she was 20. Levi Montalcini, who also serves as a senator for life in Italy, celebrates her 100th birthday on Wednesday [April 20], and she spoke at a ceremony held in her honor by the European Brain Research Institute. She shared the 1986 Nobel Prize for Medicine with American Stanley Cohen for discovering mechanisms that regulate the growth of cells and organs,” quoting the AP.
link here .
4. “COLD FUSION IS HOT AGAIN” “Twenty years ago it appeared, for a moment, that all our energy problems could be solved. It was the announcement of cold fusion - nuclear energy like that which powers the sun - but at room temperature on a table top. It promised to be cheap, limitless and clean. Cold fusion would end our dependence on the Middle East and stop those greenhouse gases blamed for global warming. It would change everything.
But then, just as quickly as it was announced, it was discredited. So thoroughly, that cold fusion became a catch phrase for junk science. Well, a funny thing happened on the way to oblivion - for many scientists today, cold fusion is hot again.
‘We can yield the power of nuclear physics on a tabletop. The potential is unlimited. That is the most powerful energy source known to man,’ researcher Michael McKubre told 60 Minutes correspondent Scott Pelley,” in this story broadcast April 19.

5. INVENTOR USES SODA POP CANS FOR SOLAR PANEL “Jim Meaney, owner of Cansolair Inc. displays how he converts pop cans into a powerful solar heating panel,” quoting YouTube.
link here And the Casolair website:

6. “FORMER ASTRONAUT: MAN NOT ALONE IN UNIVERSE” “Earth Day may fall later this week, but as far as former NASA astronaut Edgar Mitchell and other UFO enthusiasts are concerned, the real story is happening elsewhere.
Mitchell, who was part of the 1971 Apollo 14 moon mission, asserted Monday [April 20] that extraterrestrial life exists, and that the truth is being concealed by the U.S. and other governments.
He delivered his remarks during an appearance at the National Press Club following the conclusion of the fifth annual X-Conference, a meeting of UFO activists and researchers studying the possibility of alien life forms...
Mitchell grew up in Roswell, New Mexico, which some UFO believers maintain was the site of a UFO crash in 1947. He said residents of his hometown "had been hushed and told not to talk about their experience by military authorities." They had been warned of "dire consequences" if they did so. But, he claimed, they ‘didn't want to go to the grave with their story. They wanted to tell somebody reliable. And being a local boy and having been to the moon, they considered me reliable enough to whisper in my ear their particular story,’" quoting CNN.
link here .
7. “GIANT MYSTERY BLOB FOUND NEAR DAWN OF TIME” “A strange giant space “blob” spotted when the universe was relatively young has got astronomers puzzled. Using space and ground telescopes, astronomers looked back to when the universe was only 800 million years old and found something that was out of proportion and out of time. It was gaseous, big, and emitted a certain type of radiation, said study lead author Masami Ouchi, an astronomer at the Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, Calif. Scientists don’t even know what to call it. So they just called it a radiation-emitting “blob,”” quoting the AP:
link here .
8. FROM 2007: “FROZEN MAMMOTH FOUND” Though from 2007, this is a fascinating story just posted on YouTube: “The story of the discovery [in 2007] of the world's most complete baby mammoth, as told by the man who found her,” quoting National Geographic on YouTube.
link here
And, the original print story:

9. “MINIATURIZED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT” “Truly tiny implants that can test, diagnose, and even alert doctors to problems with their patients will replace costly routine visits. Researchers in the Netherlands say they've developed a pill that can be loaded with medicine and programmed to travel to a specific part of the body to unload it. A pen-size device is being developed at the University of Texas that can detect skin cancer without the need for a biopsy,” quoting BusinessWeek.

More from “20 Most Important Inventions of the Next 10 Years” in BusinessWeek:
link here .
10. “DENIAL CAN BRING MARITAL BLISS” “In a study to be published in July in the journal Psychological Science, Northwestern University psychologist Daniel Molden and colleagues were interested in the possible differences between the way dating and married couples see each other. They asked 92 dating couples and 77 married couples to complete questionnaires about satisfaction with their relationship, and not surprising, marriage changes things.
Everyone, married or dating, thinks the best partner is one who acts as a cheering section and brings out our best. But that sort of relationship only translates into a truly happy marriage when the partner seems to accept real commitment and helps in the day-to-day obligations of life as a couple.
The surprise here is not the switch from a focus on "me" to a focus on "us," as anyone who has gone from the first blush of love to picking up someone else's underwear off the floor knows to be true. What really stands out is the idea that satisfaction within any relationship is based on perception rather than actual fact, and therein lies the rub of not only love, but also of living with someone on intimate terms,” quoting LiveScience.

"Barack Obama is not given the right by our Constitution to be the judge and jury for torturers. I include Bush and Cheney in this category although they committed other war crimes.
Mr. Obama and our Congress took oaths to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the land. They must be reminded that they must do this job regardless of whether they think it is divisive or not.
If President Obama and the Congress do their jobs of enforcing the law with respect to torture and other Bush and Cheney war crimes, they will begin unraveling the web of deceit that has supported the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
We as Americans will learn things that we must learn to save countless lives here and in countries where we are supporting and waging war," from Truthout.

Last year, Claire and Amanda ran a couple of workshops with the CSE kids which included Sacred Geometry, Dr Emoto’s reflections on thought and words impacting water, Sustainability, Patterns in Nature, Art and Science, Genius Masks and much more. This year, I was not accompanied by Claire who is busy with her Biomimicry diploma, but did an interactive, drama therapy style Genius Lab with the older kids (5th and 6th graders) and we had a lot of fun. We did an hour long group activity called Developmental Transformations which is a type of Drama Therapy experience based on embodiment, encounter and play where kids are encouraged to enter into an imaginary world together and learn to hold a sustained focus in an altered state of ‘what if’ through the use of deepening levels of play, relationship, improvisation and theatre. They learn to follow, accept and support each other’s offers and create a sustained sense of being together in a fun and educational way. These type of groups allow kids to work on their relationships to each other and find greater ways to be together. It’s alot of skill in group play and is more difficult than it seems to have fifteen 5th and 6th graders concentrate and co-operate with each other for an hour of improvised, active, free-associated theatre. A few pictures from the session on our website," quoting South Africa's Amanda Gifford:

| KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF APRIL 13, 2009
|
This writer does not recall seeing this story make front-page headlines:
“THE UNITED STATES BANKING SYSTEM IS EFFECTIVELY INSOLVENT" "Nouriel Roubini, a professor of economics at the Stern School of Business at New York University, has been both pessimistic and prescient about the gathering credit problems. In a new report, Mr. Roubini estimates that total losses on loans by American financial firms and the fall in the market value of the assets they hold will reach $3.6 trillion, up from his previous estimate of $2 trillion. Of the total, he calculates that American banks face half that risk, or $1.8 trillion, with the rest borne by other financial institutions in the United States and abroad. 'The United States banking system is effectively insolvent,' Mr. Roubini said," quoting the New York Times.

The original story in Forbes: "There is a grave risk of a global L-shaped depression."

1. BUSH ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS IN HOT WATER! A. “SPAIN INVESTIGATES WHAT AMERICA SHOULD” “A Spanish court has initiated criminal proceedings against six former officials of the Bush administration. John Yoo, Jay Bybee, David Addington, Alberto Gonzales, William Haynes and Douglas Feith may face charges in Spain for authorizing torture at Guantánamo Bay. If arrest warrants are issued, Spain and any of the other 24 countries that are parties to European extradition conventions could arrest these six men when they travel abroad. Does Spain have the authority to prosecute Americans for crimes that didn't take place on Spanish soil? The answer is yes. It's called ‘universal jurisdiction,’" quoting the San Francisco Chronicle.
link here
B. “INDICTMENT OF BUSH OFFICIALS MAY COME IN DAYS” “* The imminent indictment in Spanish courts of former officials of the Bush Administration is being applauded by civil and human rights organizations and legal scholars. The popular wave of support for indictment of Bush officials will inevitably lead to Bush himself.
* Newsweek Magazine blew open more shocking news about Bush' system of kidnapping, secret prisons and torture. A secret Red Cross report indicates that many kidnapped and tortured people were turned into "disappeared persons" by the CIA under instructions from Bush and Cheney. A former Bush administration official told Newsweek's Michael Isikoff that the information had been hidden from the Red Cross. "The majority of the people in the CIA program are unaccounted for. We don't know what happened to them," a human rights investigator told Isikoff,” quoting IndictBushNow.org.

2. “THE 100 PEOPLE THAT ARE CHANGING AMERICA” “With the election of Barack Obama and the deep hole that his predecessor left for him to dig his way out of, change is no longer a dreamy notion but a reality — and a responsibility. We've ranked 100 artists and leaders, policymakers, writers, thinkers, scientists and provocateurs who are fighting every day to show us what is possible — whether it's engineering a new electrical grid, reinventing the way movies are made or challenging us to let go of our illusions and face the brave new world that stands before us. This list is not necessarily about power in the old-fashioned sense but about the power of ideas, the power of innovation, the power of making people think and making them move,” quoting Rolling Stone Magazine.

3. MAJOR STORIES LAST WEEK ABOUT DEPLETING ICE AT THE POLES A. “ICE BRIDGE RUPTURES IN ANTARCTIC” “An ice bridge linking a shelf of ice the size of Jamaica to two islands in Antarctica has snapped. Scientists say the collapse could mean the Wilkins Ice Shelf is on the brink of breaking away, and provides further evidence of rapid change in the region... Researchers regarded the ice bridge as an important barrier, holding the remnant shelf structure in place. Its removal will allow ice to move more freely between Charcot and Latady islands, into the open ocean. … While the break-up will have no direct impact on sea level because the ice is floating, it heightens concerns over the impact of climate change on this part of Antarctica. Over the past 50 years, the peninsula has been one of the fastest warming places on the planet,” quoting the BBC.
link here
B. “NEW DATA SHOW RAPID ARCTIC ICE DECLINE” “The Arctic sea ice cover continues to shrink and become thinner, according to satellite measurements and other data released yesterday, providing further evidence that the region is warming more rapidly than scientists had expected,” quoting the Washington Post.

4. “VIRUSES COULD POWER DEVICES” “A computer virus won’t help your laptop work — but a biological virus could. Tweaking their genes just so could engineer viruses for making the rechargeable lithium ion batteries that power devices such as laptops, iPods and cell phones, researchers report online April 2 in Science,” quoting ScienceNews.
link here .
5. “NEW WAY TO SPLIT WATER INTO OXYGEN AND HYDROGEN DEVELOPED” “The new approach that the Weizmann team [Prof. David Milstein and colleagues of the Weizmann Institute’s Organic Chemistry Department] has recently devised is divided into a sequence of reactions, which leads to the liberation of hydrogen and oxygen in consecutive thermal- and light-driven steps, mediated by a unique ingredient – a special metal complex that Milstein’s team designed in previous studies. Moreover, the one that they designed – a metal complex of the element ruthenium – is a ‘smart’ complex in which the metal center and the organic part attached to it cooperate in the cleavage of the water molecule,” quoting Science Daily.
link here .
6. “GETTING A DEATH GRIP ON MEMORY” “A headline in The New York Times announced a few days ago: "Brain Researchers Open Door to Editing Memory." This news ran above the fold on the front page....
Big deal. American media outlets have been pulling off such feats for a long time. The scientists trying to learn how to wipe out "specific types of memory" are lagging way behind,” quoting Truthout.
link here .
7. “RESEARCH LINKS POOR KIDS’ STRESS, BRAIN IMPARIMENT” “Children raised in poverty suffer many ill effects: They often have health problems and tend to struggle in school, which can create a cycle of poverty across generations. Now, research is providing what could be crucial clues to explain how childhood poverty translates into dimmer chances of success: Chronic stress from growing up poor appears to have a direct impact on the brain, leaving children with impairment in at least one key area -- working memory, …said Gary W. Evans, a professor of human ecology at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., who led the research,” quoting the Washington Post.
link here .
8. HOW ONE POOR KID BECAME AN AMERICAN ICON! A. “DOLLY PARTON: THE REAL QUEEN OF ALL MEDIA” “Dolly Parton calls herself "a cartoon character that I created," and neither Bugs Bunny nor Minnie Mouse ever had it so good. But there is the other Dolly Parton - the savviest woman in show business, the singer, the songwriter.
And yet another - the Hillbilly kid from the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, who grew up dirt poor in a family of 14.
She's a woman who, despite her millions, remains deeply attached to the customs, the humor and, for sure, the music of her roots.
Her latest venture is a Broadway show based on her iconic film "9 to 5" - words and music by Dolly. Writing songs and singing them is something she's been doing practically since birth,” quoting CBS News 60 Minutes. [Ed. Note: Fabulous interview with a dynamic, real person.]

9. “MECCA MOSQUES ‘WRONGLY ALIGNED’” “Some 200 mosques in Islam's holiest city, Mecca, point the wrong way for prayers, reports from Saudi Arabia say. All mosques have a niche showing the direction of the most sacred Islamic site, the Kaaba, an ancient cube-like building in Mecca's Grand Mosque. But people looking down from recently built high-rises in Mecca found the niches in many older mosques were not pointing directly towards the Kaaba,” quoting the BBC. [Ed. Note: Does this mean prayers not in alignment will not be heard?]

10. “UK LAUNCHES PROGRAM TO ARCHIVE EVERY E-MAIL” “In a move that even the most nonchalant of privacy advocates is crying foul over, the UK has put into effect a European Union directive which mandates the archival of information regarding virtually all internet traffic for the next 12 months. The program formally went into effect Monday [April 6]. The data retention rules require the archival of all email traffic (the identities of the sender and receiver, but not the contents of the messages), records of VOIP telephone calls (traditional phone calls are already monitored), and information about every website visited by any computer user in the country. The rules are being pushed down "across the board to even the smallest company," as every ISP large or small will be required to collect and store the data. That data will then be accessible -- to fight "crime and terrorism," of course -- by "hundreds of public bodies" to investigate whatever crimes they see fit,” quoting Yahoo.

Our main focus concentrates on the four flights, maneuvers performed and the reported pilots,” quoting Pilots for 9/11 Truth. [Ed. Note: a fascinating site!]

5. “PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN PORTRAIT OF LEONARDO UNVEILED” “Experts in Rome showed off a recently discovered portrait of Leonardo da Vinci on Thursday. It shows the artist and inventor as a middle-aged man with piercing eyes and long, flowing hair. The painting was discovered in December in the collection of a family from Italy's southern Basilicata region. Who painted the portrait and when it was done is still being investigated, but experts have ruled out it being a self-portrait,” quoting the AP.

7. “CHINA VIES TO BE LEADER IN ELECTRIC CARS” “Chinese leaders have adopted a plan aimed at turning the country into one of the leading producers of hybrid and all-electric vehicles within three years, and making it the world leader in electric cars and buses after that. The goal, which radiates from the very top of the Chinese government, suggests that Detroit’s Big Three, already struggling to stay alive, will face even stiffer foreign competition on the next field of automotive technology than they do today,” quoting the New York Times.

8. EU: “THE BLACK BOX THAT TRACKS EVERY MILE YOU DRIVE…” “Drivers face having their every move tracked by a 'spy in the car' black box. The system will constantly check a vehicle's speed - making cameras redundant - and allow for pay-as-you-go tolls. The £36million EU project is partly funded by the UK Government and backed by car makers and the telecoms industry. It will be unveiled later this year with a view to its integration into future cars. Manufacturers suggest this could be as early as 2013. Vehicles fitted with the system will emit a constant 'heartbeat' pulse revealing their location, speed and direction of travel. EU officials believe the technology will significantly reduce road accidents, congestion and carbon emissions,” quoting UK’s Mail.

9. “HOW MR. AYERS AND MR. LOPEZ BECAME FRIENDS” “This is one of those urban fables that happens to be true. Steve Lopez is a newspaper columnist for the Los Angeles Times; Nathaniel Ayers is a troubled man with a brilliant past.
They met by chance on the streets of downtown L.A. - an encounter that would change them both. The story of their friendship is a tale about madness, redemption, and the mysterious power of music. At the insistence of Mr. Ayers, who was taught good manners as a child, they call each other "Mister." We will do the same,” quoting CBS News 60 Minutes.
