KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 27, 2008
Daylight Savings time ends in much of the USA on Sunday, November 2 at 2 am local time. Set your clocks back one hour prior to retiring Saturday night. link here & link here

1. “AFTER HAND TRANSPLANT, PATIENT’S BRAIN ADAPTS”
“David Savage has lived most of his life with a hook in place of a right hand…
Then, almost two years ago, Savage became the third American to get a hand transplant from a cadaver donor. Today, the 56-year-old Michigan man says he wakes up every morning happy to realize that he has two hands again…
Savage's story is remarkable enough, but he's also teaching scientists remarkable new things about the adaptability of the human brain.
When a limb is amputated, the parts of the brain that control it and register feeling — hot and cold, pressure and pain — go blank. It's almost like deleting a computer program. Gradually, the brain uses that empty real estate for other things. Animal studies suggest the part of the brain that registers sensation in the face often expands to the area devoted to a missing limb.
Experts have long assumed that this brain reorganization is irreversible, especially years after an amputation. But Savage is proving them wrong,” quoting NPR with picture. “Courtesy of [Louisville, KY.] Jewish Hospital, Kleinert/Kutz and University of Louisville.”

2. “EU SCIENTISTS LAUNCH NEW, ‘UNBREAKABLE’ ENCRYPTION SYSTEM”
“A new encryption system, which its creators say is unbreakable, got its first test run Wednesday in Vienna, scientists from the European Union project SECOQC announced.
The successful demonstration, developed by the EU's Development of a Global Network for Secure Communication based on Quantum Cryptography (SECOQC) paves the way for it to be used in ordinary communications networks…
This kind of network should be commercialised within three years, said the project's Austrian coordinator, Christian Monyk.
The technology works by sending streams of light particles, or photons -- and that, say the scientists who created it, means it is entirely secure, as any eavesdropping would leave traces and immediately be detected,” quoting the AFP.

.

3. TWELVE NEW PEOPLE JOIN…RANKS OF NOBEL LAUREATES”
“Twelve new people join the distinguished ranks of Nobel Laureates now numbering 809. Once again the scope of awarded discoveries takes us on a journey, from international trade and the source of global epidemics at one extreme, to glowing jellyfish proteins and particle physics at the other.

Find out more about the 2008 Nobel Laureates before they come to Oslo and Stockholm in December to receive the Nobel Prize,” quoting the Nobel Prize site.

.

4. INT’L CONFERENCE COMES TO MIDDLE EAST FOR FIRST TIME
“For the first time in the Middle East, eight of the World’s most renowned experts on the subject are coming together to unveil scientific discoveries and the new related theories about the distant past and the civilisations that preceded us. This unique event will most certainly captivate the audience with fascinating data about how advanced the ancient people around the globe were and what we can learn from their experiences.
The speakers will present exclusive material related to scientific and archaeological discoveries on the planet, including the latest findings in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and the America,” quoting the International Conference on Ancient Studies about their November 29-30, 2008 program in Dubai. link here
.

5. “WARM WELCOME FOR HOUSE POWERED BY HYDROGEN FUEL CELL”
“From the outside, the house at the bottom of Stocking Street looks no different from any other in the cul-de-sac. But step around the back and a purpose-built shed hums with the latest in green technology - a state of the art hydrogen fuel cell.
Today the house in Lye, near Stourbridge in the West Midlands, will be opened as the first permanent hydrogen-powered home connected to the national grid. The refrigerator-sized fuel cell unit will produce 1.5kW of electricity and 3kW of heat for the occupants of the house, with any excess power being fed into the national grid,” quoting UK’s Guardian.

6. OUT-OF-THE BOX AUTOS
A. HOW ABOUT A FLYING CAR?
”If you're thinking about which hybrid vehicle to purchase, now that gas prices have dictated that you replace your Hummer, consider a vehicle that will not only eliminate high spending at the gas pump but also your time spent in traffic. Wouldn't you rather fly above the endless traffic jams in your very own ethanol-fueled flying car? I know I would.

Science fiction, right? Guess again. Welcome to Moller Int., a small company nestled in the unassuming city of Davis, CA, where they are making this science fantasy into cold hard reality via the M400 Skycar, a 'volantor' sky vehicle. Volantor refers to the capability of a vertical takeoff and landing as well as its quick and agile flight, quoting LiveScience.

Website: (with photos and vids) link here

B. UPDATE: THE AIR CAR (COMPRESSED AIR)
“Compressed air is an energy vector that can be used, in a viable way, to transport both people and goods.
The main goal of Air Car Factories is to develop and manufacture a vehicle driven by a compressed air engine with a level of performance that will respond to the actual needs of today’s market. With this aim we have drawn up a full agenda and an R&D plan of action for production start up,” quoting The Air Car. link here

C. TESLA MOTOR CAR COMPANY CASH FLOW CHALLENGES:
"Tesla announced last week that it would downsize its operations, including shuttering an office in Michigan, but it didn't specify how many of its 363 employees would be laid off...Tesla's main product now is the Tesla Roadster, a flashy, all-electric $109,000 sports car," quoting Forbes.

D. "IT'S A CAR...IT'S A PLANE"
"Innovation Economy Terrafugia CEO Carl Dietrich talks about his company's plans to build an aircraft that can also be driven on public roads. They're planning test flights later in 2008," quoting the Boston Globe. link here
.

7. UK CELEBRATES 100 YEARS OF POWERED AIR FLIGHT
"One hundred years ago to the day, Samuel Franklin Cody made the first powered flight in Britain. His great-grandson, the BBC's world affairs editor John Simpson, marked the event at a ceremony in Farnborough in Hampshire where the historic flight took place," quoting the BBC.

.

8. ”U.S. SUPREME COURT TO DETERMINE NAVY’S USE OF...SONAR”
“Today (Oct. 8), the nation’s highest Court heard arguments to determine whether President Bush had the authority earlier this year to exempt the U.S. Navy from federal environmental laws governing the use of high-intensity sonar. The White House issued the exemptions after a federal court ordered the Navy to safeguard marine mammals against harm from high-intensity, mid-frequency active sonar being used in a series of exercises off southern California. Those safeguards were sought by a coalition of conservation groups led by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC).

The Navy acknowledges that sonar can be deadly to marine mammals, and that the exercises at issue would “take” an estimated 170,000 marine mammals, including causing permanent injury to more than 500 whales and temporary deafness to at least 8,000 whales,” quoting NRDC.

.

9. “FAMILY HAS RUN WINERY FOR 623 YEARS”
“As anyone who's sat through a Thanksgiving dinner can tell you, families can drive you nuts. And if you're bold or crazy enough to go into business together, beware. A recent study found only 15 percent of family businesses survive past the second generation, meaning if the whims of the marketplace don't get you, familial rivalry or plain old fashioned greed will.

Which makes the Antinori family of Italy all the more remarkable - they've been in the same line of work for six centuries now. As correspondent Morley Safer reports, the Antinoris make wine, and the family story reads like something a wine critic might write about their product: complex, stylish, sophisticated, with a bouquet both elegant and earthy," quoting CBS News' 60 Minutes. link here
.

10. “YOUR ‘PURE’ BOTTLED WATER HAS CONTAMINANTS, TOO!”
“Tests on leading brands of bottled water turned up a variety of contaminants, including cancer-linked chemicals three times higher than California's health standard, according to a study released Wednesday by an environmental advocacy group.
The findings challenge the popular impression — and marketing pitch — that bottled water is purer than tap water, the researchers say.
However, all the brands met federal health standards for drinking water. And most of the detected contaminants are common in tap water, too…
The two-year study was done by the Washington-based Environmental Working Group, an organization founded by scientists that advocates stricter regulation. It bought bottled water in California, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Delaware,” quoting the AP.

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 20, 2008
Dear Readers;

Several of you wrote to say that Hal Turner's video on the Amero was deemed to be erroneous, and indeed that is true according to Urban Legends: link here

Even a North American Union is reported to be false: link here

While this may be reported as false, a plan about a New World Order has been spoken for years. We are moving into that time, as a global financial meltdown indicates how all are intertwined.

Stay tuned!

1. “STEM CELLS USED TO HELP PEOPLE HEAL THEMSELVES”
“After a stem cell transplant, Gregg can now feel his hips and the top of his legs. This is just the beginning for stem cells.
‘Stem cells by definition live forever, and they do,’ said Dr. Emerson Perin, Cardiologist, Texas Heart Institute.
And another breakthrough this year, for the first time, scientists were able to turn human skin cells into stem cells without using embryos.
The stem cell controversy involves using human embryos. Adult stem cells traditionally come from bone marrow,” quoting KING-5 News in Seattle.
link here
.

2. “RESEARCHERS FIND EASIER WAY TO MAKE STEM CELLS”
“Researchers trying to find ways to transform ordinary skin cells into powerful stem cells said on Sunday they found a shortcut by "sprinkling" a chemical onto the cells.
Adding the chemical allowed the team at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute in Massachusetts to use just two genes to transform ordinary human skin cells into more powerful induced pluripotent stem cells or iPS cells.
"This study demonstrates there's a possibility that instead of using genes and viruses to reprogram cells, one can use chemicals," said Dr. Doug Melton, who directed the study published in the journal Nature Biotechnology,” quoting Reuters. link here
.

3. “NEVER TO PART: DEVOTED COUPLES SHARE LIFE, DEATH”
“In hindsight, says their family, it makes sense that on June 11, 2008, when Virginia died, Aurlo was there to watch over her, just as he always had. And, though no one expected it at the time, it also made sense that just eight days after Virginia passed, after Aurlo had laid her to rest and done all the last things he could for her, he also quietly died. Their obituary in the Seattle Times began, “[They] were inseparable in life. Nor could they be separated by death itself.”
Their death certificates say that Virginia died of a stroke complicated by diabetes and dementia and that Aurlo’s cause of death was atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and senescence, deterioration due to old age.
But their son Bill Bonney has a different answer as to why Aurlo died: “a broken heart.”
He may be right. Dying beside the love of your life and passing into eternity together is the stuff of legends, but it’s also a documented phenomenon among longtime couples,” quoting MSNBC. link here
.

4. “RED WINE MAY WARD OFF LUNG CANCER: STUDY”
“Drinking red wine, but not white wine, may reduce lung cancer risk, especially among current and ex-smokers, new research indicates.
People who had ever smoked and who drank at least a glass of red wine daily were 60 percent less like to develop lung cancer than ever-smokers who didn't drink alcohol, Dr. Chun Chao of Kaiser Permanente Southern California in Pasadena and colleagues found.
But white wine didn't reduce risk, suggesting it could be compounds contained in red wine, such as resveratrol and flavonoids, rather than the healthier lifestyle associated with wine drinking, that may be protective, the researchers say,” quoting Reuters. link here

DON'T LIKE WINE, GET YOUR RESVERITROL ANOTHER WAY
"Rezilience is a unique formula of Trans-Resveratrol made from pure Polygonum Cuspidatum (Japanese Knotweed) that is manufactured in a climate controlled, oxygen-free and nitrogen rich environment by Capsugel®, a division of Pfizer. link here
.

5. “PROTECT YOUR EYES FROM COMPUTER SYNDROME”
“Tens of millions of people spend 4 to 8 hours in front of a computer every day, and it's only going to get worse. All that time can have an impact on your eyesight. Chances are you suffer from a syndrome you don't even realize you have…
Yee says when you stare at a computer, blinking decreases by as much as 60 percent.
‘We should be blinking somewhere between10 to 20 times a minute,’ said Yee [Dr. Richard W. Yee, ophthalmologist],” quoting KING-5 News in Seattle.
link here
.

6. “MOLLY THE PONY UPDATE”
“As Hurricane Gustav approached New Orleans, Molly was moved to a safe haven to ride out the approaching storm with her companion, a pony named Flossie…” link here

Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee and a temporary artificial limb was built. The Humane Society of the United States and Lifesavers Inc. (an animal-angel arm of Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue in California) provided the funds for the operation. Molly walked out of the clinic and her story really begins there,” quoting Hoofcare. link here

“Molly was the first successful amputee equid at Louisiana State University's vet school and became the subject of the fastest-selling book ever perhaps in horse book history: the first printing of the children's book about her sold out completely in 30 days and had to go back to press! (and now the second printing is going quickly).” link here
.

7. “SCIENTISTS CONFIRM SHARKS ‘VIRGIN BIRTH’”
“Scientists have confirmed the second case of a "virgin birth" in a shark.
In a study reported Friday [Oct. 10] in the Journal of Fish Biology, scientists said DNA testing proved that a pup carried by a female Atlantic blacktip shark in the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center contained no genetic material from a male.
The first documented case of asexual reproduction, or parthenogenesis, among sharks involved a pup born to a hammerhead at an Omaha, Neb., zoo,’” quoting the AP. link here
The Journal of Fish Biology report: link here
.

8. “BIRTH OF AN OCEAN…”
“In northeastern Ethiopia one of the earth’s driest deserts is making way for a new ocean. This region of the African continent, known to geologists as the Afar Depression, is pulling apart in two directions—a process that is gradually thinning the earth’s rocky outer skin. The continental crust under Afar is a mere 20 kilometers from top to bottom, less than half its original thickness, and parts of the area are over 100 meters below sea level. Low hills to the east are all that stops the Red Sea from encroaching,” quoting Scientific American. link here
.

9. “NEW JERSEY: WE’LL BECOME A WORLD LEADER IN WIND POWER”
“New Jersey is powering up an ambitious plan to become a world leader in the use of wind-generated energy.
Gov. Jon Corzine wants the Garden State to triple the amount of wind power it plans to use by 2020 to 3,000 megawatts. That would be 13 percent of New Jersey's total energy, enough to power between 800,000 to just under 1 million homes…
Environmentalists hailed the plan,” quoting The New York Times. link here
.

10. “PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR WINTER”
“As winter approaches with its guarantee of ice, snow, and frigid temperatures, you should begin to take action early to prepare and protect your home for the season. It's never too soon to start taking into consideration the numerous tasks that need to be done. You're better off preventing any potential problems ahead of time, because once the chill of winter arrives anything that goes wrong in your home will inevitably be nothing but a headache to fix. Careful planning and preparation will ensure your utilities will run efficiently during the winter, and in the end save you time, money, and a whole world of frustration. Outlined here are the major steps you should take to keep your winter home warm, comfortable, and safe,” quoting Do It Yourself.

And Clinton’s Labor Secretary Robert Reich wrote this thoughtful story “The Era of Angry Populism”: link here

What a week!

More stories of note about last week’s financial meltdown are below on #13.

1. “MEDICINE’S CUTTING EDGE: RE-GROWING ORGANS”
“Imagine re-growing a severed fingertip, or creating an organ in the lab that can be transplanted into a patient without risk of rejection. It sounds like science fiction, but it's not. It's the burgeoning field of regenerative medicine, in which scientists are learning to harness the body's own power to regenerate itself, with astonishing results,” quoting CBS News Sunday Morning from earlier this year. link here
.

2. “EARLIEST REFERENCE DESCRIBES CHRIST AS ‘MAGICIAN’”
“A team of scientists led by renowned French marine archaeologist Franck Goddio recently announced that they have found a bowl, dating to between the late 2nd century B.C. and the early 1st century A.D., that is engraved with what they believe could be the world's first known reference to Christ.
If the word "Christ" refers to the Biblical Jesus Christ, as is speculated, then the discovery may provide evidence that Christianity and paganism at times intertwined in the ancient world,” quoting Discovery Channel. link here
.

3. “ANCIENT PERU PYRAMID SPOTTED BY SATELLITE”
“A new remote sensing technology has peeled away layers of mud and rock near Peru's Cahuachi desert to reveal an ancient adobe pyramid, Italian researchers announced on Friday [Oct. 3] at a satellite imagery conference in Rome.
Nicola Masini and Rosa Lasaponara of Italy's National Research Council (CNR) discovered the pyramid by analyzing images from the satellite Quickbird, which they used to penetrate the Peruvian soil,” quoting the Discovery Channel. link here
.

4. “SPACECRAFT ZOOMS BY MERCURY...”
“A NASA probe made its second Mercury flyby early Monday as closes in on the closest planet to the sun.
The MESSENGER spacecraft was due to pick up a gravitational boost during the rendezvous today at 4:45 a.m. EDT (0845 GMT) that will help it settle into orbit around Mercury in 2011. But scientists also directed MESSENGER's cameras and sensors to capture new images and data from areas of the planet that remained uncharted after its first flyby on Jan. 14.
"Mercury has been a real anomaly in that, up until now, we have not seen the entire surface on one of the bodies closest to the Earth," said Sean Solomon, MESSENGER's principal investigator at the Carnegie Institution of Washington, during a teleconference last week,” quoting LiveScience. link here
.

5. “THE RACE FOR AN ELECTRIC CAR”
“The price of oil is up, gas guzzling cars are out, and a race for a fuel-free, practical electric car is on.

It includes the usual suspects: Detroit, Japan, and Germany. But as correspondent Lesley Stahl reports, a surprising newcomer with no experience at building cars has entered the race: Silicon Valley.

The jury is still out on whether electric cars can ever be really practical, but the computer geeks in California are betting that their inventiveness can beat out Detroit's cumbersome bureaucracy in producing a viable e-car.

One of the reasons electric cars have never taken off has been battery technology. A few years ago, someone wondered: why not use the batteries they put in laptop computers called lithium-ion batteries? That's when the environmentally-conscious hi-tech industry in California jumped in,” quoting CBS News. [Ed. Note: Why is GM having so many problems when they have the technology to produce an electric car? See the movie Who Killed the Electric Car? link here ]

6. GPS COULD SAVE AIRLINES BILLIONS IN FUEL COSTS”
“A World War II-era air traffic network that often forces planes to take longer, zigzagging routes is costing U.S. airlines billions of dollars in wasted fuel while an upgrade to a satellite-based system has languished in the planning stages for more than a decade.
The $35 billion plan would replace the current radar system with the kind of GPS technology that has become commonplace in cars and cell phones. Supporters say it would triple air traffic capacity, reduce delays by at least half, improve safety and curb greenhouse gas emissions.
An Associated Press analysis of federal and industry data found that if the new system were already in place, airlines could have saved more than $5 billion in fuel this year alone,’” quoting the AP. link here
.

7. “SCIENTISTS: 1 IN 4 MAMMALS FACES EXTINCTION”
“Conservationists have taken the first detailed look at the world's mammals in more than a decade, and the news isn't good.

‘We estimate that one in four species is threatened with extinction and that the population of one in two is declining,’ the researchers said in a report to be published Friday in the journal Science. The findings were being released Monday at the IUCN meeting in Barcelona, Spain,” quoting the AP. link here

8. "MAMMOTH FOSSIL FOUND IN IKE-RAVAGED YARD"
"A homeowner whose beachfront property in Texas was destroyed during Hurricane Ike has found a football-size fossil tooth in the debris.

Dorothy Sisk asked her colleague, Lamar University paleontologist Jim Westgate, to accompany her to her Bolivar Peninsula home after Ike hit. Together they found something unusual in the remains of Sisk's front yard: a six-pound fossil tooth.

Westgate believes the fossil is from a Columbian mammoth common in North America until around 10,000 years ago,” quoting the AP. link here
.

9. “TOURING THE GREENEST MUSEUM EVER”
“The California Academy of Sciences, based in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, opens its doors to the public this weekend following three years of construction and 10 years of planning.
The 410,000 square foot (38,000 square metre) structure is just as big a draw as the exhibits it houses.
Designed by Renzo Piano, a winner of the most respected prize in architecture, the Pritzker, the Academy has green credentials running through every sinew and vein: from the planetarium to the aquarium and from the rainforest to the living roof which mirrors the hills the city is built on,” quoting the BBC. link here

KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF OCTOBER 6, 2008
While the economy and U. S. Presidential election fervor have shoved most other news to the back burner, the start of “the Large Hadron Collider, a massive, multibillion dollar project designed to unlock the secrets of the universe” are of immense importance.
CBS News "60 Minutes Visits One Of The Biggest Science Experiments Ever, The Large Hadron Collider” in this terrific story": link here

1. “RESEARCHER BELIEVES HE’S FOUND KEY THAT UNLOCKS EGYPT’S SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE”
“A real secret message discovered by a local man among Egypt's ancient ruins could be stranger than the fictional stories we love involving Indiana Jones or "The DaVinci Code."
East Stroudsburg-born Edward Nightingale says he has unraveled the most famous of ancient Egyptian riddles...
And he believes his discovery has uncovered a collection of advanced mathematical principles that could change our understanding of matter and the universe.
He also believes this information was intentionally embedded in the blueprint of the ancient ruins, for future generations to discover,” quoting the Pocono [PA] Record.

2. INTRODUCING “THE HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS PROJECT”
“The Human Consciousness Project is an international consortium of multidisciplinary scientists and physicians who have joined forces to research the nature of consciousness and its relationship with the brain, as well as the neuronal processes that mediate and correspond to different facets of consciousness. The Human Consciousness Project will conduct the world’s first large-scale scientific study of what happens when we die and the relationship between mind and brain during clinical death. The diverse expertise of the team ranges from cardiac arrest, near-death experiences, and neuroscience to neuroimaging, critical care, emergency medicine, immunology, molecular biology, mental health, and psychiatry,” quoting Beyond the Mind-Body Problem.

3. “FAITH, FEAR, AND FREE WILL: AN OVERVIEW DRAWING FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE”
“Just as religion has helped shape our modern culture,
1. religious faith has also helped in shaping the architecture of our personal identity, our perception of ourselves and of the world around us.
2. How has religious belief in a supreme being shaped the landscape of our personal experience and the scope of our individual exploration? Has faith interfered with individuals' ability to take charge and change their destiny? In what ways has religion promoted or curtailed the exercise of free will and freedom of expression, which are the highest qualities of our human nature? For many people of faith, even in our modern society, their religion has had a stifling effect in their personal lives.
Instead of promoting a better life and openness to something greater, certain religious traditions often limit, condition, and keep their people in stasis, or worse.
3. As a Catholic seminarian and student of theology, I experienced such limitations, and their subsequent effects, firsthand,” by Jaime Leal-Anaya in SuperConsciousness Magazine. [free registration required]. link here

4. “COPPER USED TO FIGHT HOSPITAL INFECTIONS”
“’Hospital-acquired infection is the dirty little secret of healthcare,’ said Dr. Michael Schmidt, a microbiologist with Medical University of South Carolina.
Microbiologist Michael Schmidt hopes to reduce infections with something that's probably in your pocket.
‘Copper is microbiocidal. It's a metal and when the bacteria come in contact with it, they die,’ he said.
Studies show copper destroys nearly all of infection-causing microbes…
In Schmidt's study, copper replaces plastic components in bed rails, nurse call buttons, tray tables and keyboards. Dr. Cassandra Salgado says copper adds another layer of protection...
Not only is the goal to save lives, but money too. Currently, hospital infections cost the health care system 30 billion dollars a year.
‘We're looking for a 50-percent reduction and that's $15 billion,’ said Salgado,” quoting KING-5 News, NBC in Seattle:

6. “SALE OF 24-KARAT GOLD COINS HALTED”
“The U.S. Mint is temporarily halting sales of its popular American Buffalo 24-karat gold coins because it can't keep up with soaring demand as investors seek the safety of gold amid economic turbulence.

Mint spokesman Michael White said Friday that the sales were being suspended because demand for the coins, which were first introduced in 2006, has exceeded supply and the Mint's inventory of the coins has been depleted.
The Mint had to temporarily suspend sales of its American Eagle one-ounce gold coins on Aug. 15 and then later that month announced sales of the American Eagle coins would resume under an allocation program to designated dealers…
"People are scared. Gold has become a safe haven," said Michael Maroney, a vice president of sales at gold dealer Monex Precious Metals in Newport Beach, Calif.,” quoting Wallet Pop.

With hydrogen as its only fuel, this vehicle emits no greenhouse gases and serves as an alternative to traditional, petroleum-dependent vehicles that emit carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and other air pollutants. “This is the first time in the history of the United States that the president has sought to provoke a financial panic to get legislation through Congress. While this has proven to be a successful political strategy, it marks yet another low point in American politics.

It was incredibly irresponsible for President Bush to tell the American people on national television that the country could be facing another Great Depression. By contrast, when we actually were in the Great Depression, President Roosevelt said that, ‘we have nothing to fear, but fear itself,’" quoting the Center for Economic & Policy Research in Truthout.
