KLEINER'S KORNER FOR WEEK OF May 26, 2008
Dear Readers;

Monday, May 26th is Memorial Day and is the time when America pauses to honor those that have given their lives in service to their country. Kleiner’s Korner appreciates and honors all of those who have served to defend, protect, and preserve our country from outside invaders. Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day “to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action,” quoting Wikipedia. link here

[Ed. Note: While we pause to honor those that gave their lives against outside invaders, the collective population of the USA has done little to reign in the powers this President & Vice-President have afforded themselves. Not since Nixon’s Watergate Era have we seen such abuse of power, trampling on the U. S. Constitution and egregious acts done against fellow citizens in their home country. The difference between then and now is that a bi-partisan Congress saw Nixon’s abuses and went after them for the whole world to see. We see no Republican Senator today of the caliber of then-Senator Howard Baker (R-TN.) and many others coming together with Democrats to impeach the President. Indeed, Nixon’s abuses of power pale in comparison to this President’s.

On this Memorial Day, this writer’s thoughts and prayers are with the families that have had to endure monumental suffering at the hands of this administration by losing sons and daughters in a deceptive war and getting swept aside in the “fog of war”; people like Pat Tillman’s mother, who explained her story for CBS News 60 Minutes May 4, 2008. Mr. Tillman was an NFL football great who was inspired to enlist to serve his country after 9/11 and was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan, with the Pentagon covering-up the truth and using Tillman’s name to fabricate more deceptions: link here ]

1. "WEB-LIKE FILAMENTS THAT FORM THE BACKBONE OF THE UNIVERSE"
"Astronomers have found some matter that had been missing in deep space and say it is strung along web-like filaments that form the backbone of the universe.

The ethereal strands of hydrogen and oxygen atoms could account for up to half the matter that scientists knew must be there but simply could not see, the researchers reported on Tuesday.

Scientists have long known there is far more matter in the universe than can be accounted for by visible galaxies and stars. Not only is there invisible baryonic matter -- the protons and neutrons that make up atoms -- but there also is an even larger amount of invisible "dark" matter.

Now about half of the missing baryonic matter has turned up, seen by the orbiting Hubble space telescope and NASA's Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, or FUSE.

"We think we are seeing the strands of a web-like structure that forms the backbone of the universe," said Mike Shull of the University of Colorado, who helped lead the study published in The Astrophysical Journal," quoting Reuters. link here

3. “MAN’S RARE ABILITY MAY UNLOCK SECRET OF MEMORY”
“...Williams [Brad] is one of only three people in the world identified with this off-the-charts autobiographical memory, according to researchers at the University of California-Irvine who gave the condition its name: hyperthymestic syndrome, from the Greek words for excessive (hyper) and remembering (thymesis).
Unlike most people whose memories fade with time, much of Williams' life is etched indelibly in his mind.
‘It's just there,’ said Williams, 51, who reports the news for a family of radio stations in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
The California researchers are studying Williams and the two others with hyperthymestic syndrome, a man in Ohio and woman in California, hoping to gain new insights into how a superior memory works.
The goal of the study is to find a way to help people with failing memory,” quoting CNN. link here

4. “VATICAN SAYS ALIENS COULD EXIST”
“The Pope's chief astronomer says that life on Mars cannot be ruled out.
Writing in the Vatican newspaper, the astronomer, Father Gabriel Funes, said intelligent beings created by God could exist in outer space.
Father Funes, director of the Vatican Observatory near Rome, is a respected scientist who collaborates with universities around the world.
The search for forms of extraterrestrial life, he says, does not contradict belief in God.
The official Vatican newspaper headlines his article 'Aliens Are My Brother',” quoting the BBC.
The article continues with this folly, “Just as there are multiple forms of life on earth, so there could exist intelligent beings in outer space created by God. And some aliens could even be free from original sin, he speculates. [OH, REALLY!?!]
Asked about the Catholic Church's condemnation four centuries ago of the Italian astronomer and physicist, Galileo, Father Funes diplomatically says mistakes were made, but it is time to turn the page and look towards the future.”
[Ed. Note: Spare me! How about the church exonerating and asking forgiveness for the brutal death of Giordano Bruno in a central Roman market square, his tongue in a gag, tied to a pole naked and burned at the stake, on February 17, 1600 for his view of the plurality of worlds! And Bruno was Galileo's mentor, who was exonerated 350 years after his death.]. link here

“Microsoft wants you to boldly go where you have never gone before — right from your PC desktop. The vehicle is the WorldWide Telescope, a breathtaking educational resource that turns your Windows computer into a virtual observatory of space.
The free application combines downloadable software and Web 2.0 smarts. It seamlessly weaves together 12 terabytes of data and gorgeous imagery from the world's finest telescopes — the Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory Center, Spitzer Space Telescope and more. You're left with a remarkable window into space,” quoting USA Today.

6. “FREE ENERGY – PENTAGON CONSPIRACY TO COVER UP”
“Stanley Meyer and many others. Always the same story. The Pentagon wants to see your idea and tell you how they would like to use your invention. You demonstrate your device proving to them that it works, then they block all of your efforts and end up killing you. The only way to get a free energy device out to the public is to forget about patents, distribute underground, sell it to EV enthusiasts with the plans and encourage them to travel around and do as you are, you then have created a non interlinked underground distribution system that will spread to the general populous and it will spread like wild fire, it will be un-stoppable,” quoting this YouTube story.

10. “WIND COULD PROVIDE 20% OF NATION’S ENERGY”
“Two decades from now Americans could get as much electricity from windmills as from nuclear power plants, according to a U.S. government report that lays out a possible plan for wind energy growth.
The report, a collaboration between the Energy Department research labs and industry, concludes wind energy could generate 20 percent of the nation's electricity by 2030, about the same share now produced by nuclear reactors.
Such growth would pose a number of major challenges, but is achievable without the need of major new technological breakthroughs, said the report released Monday [May 12], “ quoting the AP. link here

1. WERE TOADS' EXODUS WARNING OF COMING EARTHQUAKE IN CHINA?
"On May 9,2008,hundreds of thousands of toads went on a journey in Mianzhu City, near Wenchuan County,in Sichuan. People worried about it as the threat of natural disaster," quoting Virtual Review 3 days BEFORE the 7.9 earthquake in the area.

AND:
TOADS ON THE MARCH IN JIANGSU PROVINCE:
"According to recent estimates, the earthquake that hit China on Monday [May 12] could leave 10,000 people dead. Web users are saying that the catastrophe could have been avoided, if only they had listened to the toads.

Two days before the quake thousands of toads suddenly decided to move across a bridge in Taizhou, a town in the Jiangsu province (see photos). Chinese web users are wondering why the local authorities didn't relate the event to the imminence of an earthquake, and why scientists didn't take notice of the bizarre disappearance of a lake in Enshi, in the Hubei province, on April 26 (see photos).

A seismologist tells us that the Chinese have long relied on the behaviour of animals to predict earthquakes. Although there's no scientific study to back up the farmers' claims, the idea that toads sensed the earthquake should not be ruled out," quoting The Observers.

AND:
"QUAKE 'PREDICTED' 5 YEARS AGO"
From China Daily, "A seismologist warned more than five years ago that based on historical records and animal studies, a strong earthquake was likely in Sichuan.

"Sichuan is virtually certain to experience an earthquake measuring above 7 in the next few years," Chen Xuezhong, a senior researcher with the geophysics institute of State Seismological Bureau (SSB), wrote in a paper published in December 2002, in the periodical Recent Developments in World Seismology.

2. "MICHAEL KNIGHT'S EARTH CHANGE REPORT...[VOLCANOES UPDATE]"
"From the desk of Editor Michael Knight. May 10 2008

In the documentary “Contact Has Begun,” we looked at volcanoes as one of a number of imminent – “abrupt” - earth changes.

Dr Brooks Agnew presented a map of all the world’s volcanoes – noted that volcanic activity was on the increase – and now there is no doubt about it.

Imagine a cloud of volcanic ash stretching 1800 miles from where you live.

That’s the extent of the “vog” (volcanic fog) that has spread from coast to coast of South America from the eruption of the Chaiten volcano in Chile.

It has traveled from the Pacific to the Atlantic – and overland from Chaiten to Buenos Aries in Argentina," quoting Mr. Knight's website.

"The men were air traffic controllers. Experienced, calm professionals. Nobody was drinking. But they were so worried about losing their jobs that they demanded their names be kept off the official report.

No one, they knew, would believe their claim an unidentified flying object landed at the airport they were overseeing in the east of England, touched down briefly, then took off again at tremendous speed. Yet that's what they reported happened at 4 p.m. on April 19, 1984.

The incident is one of hundreds of reported sightings contained in more than 1,000 pages of formerly secret UFO documents being released Wednesday by Britain's National Archives. It is one of the few that was never explained," quoting the AP. link here

5. "EINSTEIN LETTER CALLS BIBLE 'PRETTY CHILDISH'"
"Albert Einstein: arch rationalist or scientist with a spiritual core?

A letter being auctioned in London this week [May 13] adds more fuel to the long-simmering debate about the Nobel Prize-winning physicist's religious views. In the note, written the year before his death, Einstein dismissed the idea of God as the product of human weakness and the Bible as "pretty childish."

The letter, handwritten in German, is being sold by Bloomsbury Auctions on Thursday and is expected to fetch between $12,000 and $16,000...

In it, Einstein said that 'the word God is for me nothing more than the expression and product of human weaknesses, the Bible a collection of honorable but still primitive legends which are nevertheless pretty childish.'

'For me,' he added, 'the Jewish religion like all other religions is an incarnation of the most childish superstitions.'

Addressing the idea that the Jews are God's chosen people, Einstein wrote that 'the Jewish people to whom I gladly belong and with whose mentality I have a deep affinity have no different quality for me than all other people. As far as my experience goes, they are also no better than other human groups, although they are protected from the worst cancers by a lack of power. Otherwise I cannot see anything 'chosen' about them.'

Bloomsbury spokesman Richard Caton said the auction house was "100 percent certain" of the letter's authenticity. It is being offered at auction for the first time, by a private vendor," quoting the AP. [Ed. Note: This writer was also born a Jew and have developed almost identical views to Einstein's.] link here

"EINSTEIN'S LETTER ON RELIGION SELLS FOR £170,000 [$331,500 USD]
From UK's Guardian, "Bloomsbury Auctions in Mayfair, which handled the sale, was deluged with interest in the lot which had been given a guide price of between £6000 and £8000.

'It beats the world record for an Einstein letter by about 4 times,' said managing director Rupert Powell," link here

7. "HEAL BOY: HOW PETS CAN KEEP YOU HEALTHY"
"Pets As Therapy is a charity that takes pet dogs and cats to hospitals, hospices, residential care homes, day centres and special-needs schools. It was formed in 1983, explains chief executive Maureen Hennis, by a group of pet owners who were convinced that their animals could help other people. "At that time, people were moving into residential accommodation and nursing homes, and they had to give up their own pets," she says. "This wasn't only making them sad and depressed, sometimes it was actually making them ill."

The importance of regular contact with domestic animals has been highlighted by recent research conducted by the University of Minnesota. According to the study, having a cat around the house can cut the risk of having a heart attack or a stroke by almost half. After studying nearly 4,500 adults aged between 30 and 75 for 10 years, it was found that cat owners had a 40 per cent lower risk of suffering a fatal heart attack," quoting UK's independent.

"Some good news from the government scientists who study pollution in U.S. coastal waters: A newly released 20-year study shows overall levels of pesticides and industrial chemicals generally are decreasing.

The Mussel Watch program of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration examined levels of 140 chemicals from 1986 to 2005 in coastal areas and estruaries of Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the East and West coasts, the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes. Mussel Watch is the longest continuous contaminant monitoring program in U.S. coastal waters.

Gunnar Lauenstein, an oceanographer who's the lead scientist of the program, said the levels are continuing to decrease, many years after environmental laws were enacted in the 1970s," quoting McClatchy Newspapers. link here

1. MEET MOLLY THE HORSE WITH AN ARTIFICIAL LEG!
"Now, my friends, meet Molly. She’s a gray-speckled "POA" pony who was abandoned by her owners when Katrina hit southern Louisiana. She spent weeks on her own before finally being rescued and taken to a farm where abandoned animals were stockpiled. While there, she was attacked by a pit bull terrier, and almost died. Her gnawed right front leg became badly infected and her vet went to the veterinariansa at Louisiana State University (LSU) for help.

But after the local veterinarian persisted, LSU surgeon Rustin Moore agreed to meet Molly, and that meeting changed his mind. He saw how the pony was careful to lie down on different sides so she didn't seem to get sores, and how she allowed people to handle her raw, infected limb. When she stood up, she protected her injured leg. She constantly shifted her weight, and didn’t overload her good leg. She was a smart pony with a serious survival ethic.

Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee and a temporary artificial limb was built. The Humane Society of the United States and Lifesavers Inc. (an animal-angel arm of Lifesavers Wild Horse Rescue in California) provided the funds for the operation. Molly walked out of the clinic and her story really begins there," quoting Hoofblog.

3. "IT'S NOT IMMORAL TO WANT TO BE IMMORTAL"
"Is it right to want to try to live forever? This ethical question is being kicked around quite a bit these days.

As the science of regenerative medicine using stem cells inches forward, as more is understood about how lifestyle influences longevity, as organ and tissue transplants become routine and as geneticists begin to unravel the secrets of why we age, the prospect of living forever — or at least until the Cubs win a pennant — makes the question something more than an exercise in science fiction.

What is particularly interesting is that many of those raising the question of the ethics of immortality do so with an answer already in mind — 'No, it’s not right!'" quoting Arthur Caplan, Ph.D.

4. "MOVING CLOSER TO A 'MATRIX'-STYLE VIRTUAL WORLD"
"What if a computer could make you a picture-perfect glass of milk, let you feel the tension as it pulled an ant’s leg from another room, and chat you up with the charisma of Oprah Winfrey? No one machine can do all three — yet. But some sophisticated new projects are showing just how far we’ve come toward creating an “I can’t believe it’s not real” virtual world.

Last month, Brookhaven National Laboratory computer scientist Michael McGuigan told New Scientist magazine he believed a “Matrix”-style virtual world, in which one cannot always distinguish between what’s real and what’s not, could be up and running in just a few years. His optimism derived in part from the impressive ramp-up in processing speed he obtained with the lab’s BlueGene/L supercomputer while running a conventional ray-tracing software program that mimics the effect of natural light.

The result? An eye-fooling virtual beam,"quoting MSNBC.

5. "CAN YOU BECOME A CREATURE OF NEW HABITS?"
"HABITS are a funny thing. We reach for them mindlessly, setting our brains on auto-pilot and relaxing into the unconscious comfort of familiar routine. “Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting herd,” William Wordsworth said in the 19th century. In the ever-changing 21st century, even the word “habit” carries a negative connotation.

So it seems antithetical to talk about habits in the same context as creativity and innovation. But brain researchers have discovered that when we consciously develop new habits, we create parallel synaptic paths, and even entirely new brain cells, that can jump our trains of thought onto new, innovative tracks.

Rather than dismissing ourselves as unchangeable creatures of habit, we can instead direct our own change by consciously developing new habits. In fact, the more new things we try — the more we step outside our comfort zone — the more inherently creative we become, both in the workplace and in our personal lives.

But don’t bother trying to kill off old habits; once those ruts of procedure are worn into the hippocampus, they’re there to stay. Instead, the new habits we deliberately ingrain into ourselves create parallel pathways that can bypass those old roads," quoting the New York Times.

"They say that Michelangelo embedded powerful and even dangerous messages in the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel, that he encoded these messages using his knowledge of mystic Jewish texts and that he intended some images as insults to the pope....

'In the late 1970s, a surgeon went into the Sistine Chapel, took a look at this [fresco]. He said to himself, wait, this is Anatomy 101.… This is actually a cross-section of the brain, the right hand side of the brain,' Blech said," quoting ABC News.

7. PARENTS CREATE ALTERNATIVES TO EARBUDS THAT ARE CAUSING A GENERATION OF HEARING IMPAIRED
"Christine Ingemi, with four children under the age of 11, faced a future of hearing music in quadraphonic sound, even though her kids wore earbuds with their iPods. They played their music loud, and she could easily hear it.

“I had the same battle every mother has, always trying to tell them to turn it down,” she said. “I just couldn’t really do anything to prevent it.”

So the New Hampshire mom got mad — and got an idea at the same time. She came up with earbuds that limit the volume from the music player to a safer level. Three thousand miles away, in California, another parent, Ken Wright, came up with a different concept for earphones after being concerned about his 13-year-old daughter’s hearing when she cranked up her iPod," quoting MSNBC.

10. FOLLOW-UP TO LAST WEEK'S BIRTHDAYS STORY: "HAPPY [90TH] BIRTHDAY MIKE"
"We don't ordinarily do birthdays here on 60 Minutes but this is sort of special. Friday [May 9] will be Mike Wallace's 90th birthday. That may seem pretty old to you but if you meet Mike on the street, don't bet you can beat him around the block because he's still in better shape than most men at 40...

One of the things that this broadcast does best is illicit information from interesting people and in the brief history of television, no one has ever done that better than Mike Wallace.

I don't know if a list of interesting names is interesting or not but I was amazed to see a list of the people Mike has interviewed. Here are just a few of them: Richard Nixon, Johnny Carson, Henry Kissinger, Nancy Reagan, Larry King, Jimmy Carter, Bette Davis, Yasser Arafat, Eddie Arcaro, Frank Lloyd Wright, Carol Burnett, Bill Parcells, Salman Rushdie, Vladimir Putin, Al Sharpton, Vladimir Horowitz, Donald Trump, Jack Kevorkian, Malcolm X, Roger Clemens, Tennessee Williams, Tallulah Bankhead, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Oscar Hammerstein, Woody Allen, Eleanor Roosevelt, Martina Navratilova, Jesse Jackson, The Shah of Iran, Golda Meir," quoting Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes.

3. "WOUNDED VET PLAYS LACROSSE AFTER LOSING LIMBS”
“John Fernandez should not have been playing lacrosse Saturday in the Army-Navy alumni game at Madison Square Garden.
By all rights, the former U.S. Army first lieutenant should be dead. But luck intervened.
“It was just a matter of chance — pure luck,” said Fernandez of Shoreham, Long Island, who was severely wounded in Iraq after a U.S. plane dropped a 500-pound bomb on his Humvee in a case of friendly fire on April 3, 2003. Shrapnel from the explosion shredded his legs...
More than five years later, the soldier can do more than just walk. He can play lacrosse thanks to prosthetic limbs, as he demonstrated during the Heroes Cup, which preceded the New York Titans professional game Saturday night,” quoting the AP. link here

5. “JOLTING THE BRAIN FIGHTS DEEP DEPRESSION”
“Imagine what a pacemaker does to your heart: Its electrical impulses regulate a heartbeat that's out of whack.
Now picture a pacemaker-type device that jolts the brain and regulates mood circuits, potentially easing deep depression no other treatments can touch.
In what some are hailing as a brave new use of existing technology, researchers presented evidence this week at the American Association of Neurological Surgeons' annual scientific meeting that deep brain stimulation does just that, improving both severe depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder, a frequent companion disorder,” quoting CNN.

6. “STUDENT EDUCATES HIMSELF: LOSES 180 POUNDS”
“Around the same time, he had another wake-up call. His 11-year-old cousin was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and his grandmother was diagnosed with Type 2, or adult onset diabetes. Their diagnoses combined with a family history of obesity to convince Hollas he had to make a change.
That very same day in 2001, he took the first step toward weight loss by eliminating soft drinks from his diet.
Hollas [Brandon Hollas, 25, of Cameron, Texas] also joined the recreation center on campus and started riding an exercise bicycle. He lost 50 pounds within six months. The weight loss motivated him to begin learning about health and fitness at the school's library and in men's health magazines.
‘I wasn't educated about how to eat right or how to lose weight,’ Hollas recalled. ‘I read all about nutrition, how to change meals to make them [healthier],’" quoting CNN.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single
thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical
path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think
over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives."
Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862)
